The lollowuij? is an extract Irma a lorthcominn
work of Dr. Peters, the discoverer of the celebrated
Vegetable Aiili-Ililious Pills.
“ Hen!lh l wealth mid enjoyment uro the three
prime ejects of life. The Ino former are
only sought ns a means to obtain the latter.—
Man seeks for wealth as the means of enjoyment.
But vain is such pursuit without the possession of
health. Without bodily strength and vigor, neither
the physical nor the mental—neither the inner nor
the outward man is capable of any achievement,
whether of wealth or enjoyment, Metis sana in
eotpore sano—a sound mind in a sound hotly—is
the sine qua non—the absolute requisite, forjany elli
cient effort in the attainment of human ends. The
mind maybe active, hut if the body he feeble, then
is the mind active to little purpose. Enjoyment is
not there ; and the finest laid plans are rendered
abortive by ’.lie shattered condition of our tenement
of day.
Butsav that a man could obtain wealth—that he
could acquire the gold ofOphir, and bring home all
the treasures of the mines of Golconda, yet without
health, where would be his happiness ? lie w ould
be miserable in the midst of nig gold and his dia
monds; he would-pino away in wretchedness and
despair, and he would exclaim with the wise man
of old, “ all is vanity and vexation of spirit,’’ Ilia
limbs arc racked with pain and ko cannot rest, his
appetite is gone, and ho loathes his food; his sto
mach is oppressed with nausea, and he turns sick
ening away at the bounties of a munificent provi
dence. He would give all ho is worth—nay, all the
world—if be bad it —lor the poor but healthy man's
appetite.
“ Please givo me,” said a hungry' wretch to a
wealthy feeble man, “ please give me a sixpence to
buy me a morsel of food; 1 am almost starved !”
“ I would give a thousand dollars for your appe
tite,” said the rich man, ns lie handed the hungry
one a dollar.
Os so much importance is health to tire enjoy
ment of life!
But whereto, methinks 1 hear Ice render nsk,sub
serves (his homily on so-pluin and hackneyed a.sub
ject? Do wo not all know Ilia value of health ?
Do we not nil attend to it, as pup of the chief, if not
the chiefest concerns of our mortal existence ? Do
we not employ the means to attain and preserve it ’?
Do we not lay out money—do we not fee physi
cians—do we not follow their advice—do wo not
swallow their prescriptions ?
True—most true—gentle reader, thou do«H all
things, we dare say, and more. Still, we cannot
believe our homily on health to he altogether unne
cessary. As in morals, so in physic is it requisite
to have “ hue upon line, and precept upon precept.”
Men in health Ibrgol that they mi.y be sick , and
men in sickness do not always employ the most ju
dicious means to attain health.
Very true, Doctor—men do not as you say always
pursue the .Tight road to health. Wow, I know of
some people who are always dosing themselves
W'ith physic, unu running to the doctors and apoth
ecaries every day of their lives. They take, I verily
believe, a dart load of drugs in a year, and yet they
arc not well after all
Do you know the reason ?
Why, yes, in my opinion there are two reasons.
In the first ptace they take too much medicine, and.
fn the second, they do not take the rich! kind. J
used to make the same mistake. But lately, that is
to say lor two or three years past, I’vo hit upon a
better plan. I take Ur. Voters’ Vegetable Bilious
Bills, and I derive more benefit from one dollar laid
out in them, than 1 used in paying fifty in any for
mer pursuit of health, besides saving u world of
nausea and disgust in swallowing an enormous
quantity of medicines. Do you know Dr. Potent ?
Very well.
And have you ever taken Ins medicine ?
lwcrcabluckliondel.se. i.
They tell mo he is none of your quacks, who un
dertakes to mend and regulate the human machine
without so much as a knowledge of its parts,
and how they arc put together. They say he un
derstands anatomy and physiology, I think they call
thorn, and is as familiar with botany and chemistry
as 1 am with the road to mill.
Yon are rightly informed. Dr. I’oters is no cm- ,
ptric. He does not undertake whet lie does not
understand. Ho was regularly bred to the healing
art. He has spent years in the acquisition of know
ledge ; ho has devoted hinlse.f’o ihe study of the .
human frame, and the diseases to which it is suh- ,
ject, and now he is applying his acquisition to the
relief of suffering humaiiily. j
He does not put forth thy absurd claims often ad- ,
vanned by the inventors of patent nostrums—name i
ly, that o( curing all diseases with u single pre- |
sen pi ion ! Such a pretence ho would deem about
as difficult to swallow as to lake the nostrums of ;
[hose who put it forth. There is no such medicine.
There is not, and never was, a panacea for all dis
eases The Vegetable Bilious Bills pretend to no
such miracle. But what is infinitely better they
ofliict w hat they undertake They keep the word
of pr muse to the stomach, and the printu via which
they make to the ear and eye. And that indeed is
no slight recommendation. Nor are lho complaints 1
to which these Pills arc adapted lew nor far be
tween. The disorders arising from a morbid state 1
of the bile are, unfortunately, many, distressing and
fatal. /. largo portion of all the fevers, especially
at the south and in the marshy districts, are owing
to this cause, from the distressing ague and fever,
which almost shakes asunder life and limb, to the
fearful “ Yellow Jack,” which seldom quits his vie
tim without sundering soul and body as he lakes
his leave.
Conversant from his previous practice, with dis
ease, mall its forms, w Inch originates from the dis
order of the bile, Dr. Peters was first led to employ t
h ; s knowledge and experience in the preparation of
a medicine which should proye (fPcactous in this 1
large class of diseases, which should relieve theach- I
ing and the dizzy head, and restore the nauseated (
and loathing stomach, at Ihe same time that It pre
vented those more fatal effects which ate so apt to t
follow from their imprudent neglect.
For this purpose be prepared with much care and
just adaption to the purpose, the Vegetable Bilious *
Pills, which he is happy to say, from long experi
ence, and ihe abundant testimony of those, who have
employed them have answ i red, more than answered '
his sanguine expectations.
It is not his own mete assertion you are call •'
cd on to believe. It is not the ipse dixit of any single '
man—though he was as grdut ns Galen of Hippo- 1
crates—that you are to pin your faith upon Moi- I
ther—although it is said in the sacred volume that
“ by the mouth of two or throo witnesses shall all
things be established”—are you to believe in so
small a number only ? A cloud of witnesses is be- t
fore you They arc too numerous to be easily
overlooked, they are too intelligent to be careKssiv
heard; they are too respectable to be slightly re- ,
gardod.
Believing the spontaneous testimony of those (
whose experience is the best test of the noth they (
assort. Dr, Peters has thrown together in the fol
lowing pages, a few of the many hundreds of testi
monials received from every quarter where hie
pills haw come into use. They are left to sp--ak
lor themselves. They are the words of those who
“speak what they do know, and tes tfy to what
they have seen and experienced.”
