Tho following is an extract from a forthcoming
work of Dr. Peters, the discoverer of the celebrated
Vegetable Anti-Hiltons Pills.
“ llealib, wealth and enjoyment are the lliree
prime ojecl* ol life. The two former arc
only sought ns n means to obtain tho latter.—
Man seeks for wealth as the means of enjoyment.
Hut vain is such pursuit w ithout the possession of
liealih. Without bodily strength and vigor, neither
the physical nor the mental —neither the inner nor
the outward man is capable ol any achievement,
whether ol weailh or enjoyment. Mens sana in
eoipore sano —n sound mind in a sound body—is
Ibesins qua non—tho absulnto requisite, for',any odi
cienl effort in the attnininonl ofliiinmn ends. The
mind may bo active, but if the body be feeble, then
isihe mind active to little purpose. Knjoymeiil is
not there ; and the finest laid plans are rendered
abortive by the shattered condition of our tenement
of clay.
Hut say that a man rniild obtain wealth—that he
could acquire Ihe gold of Ophir, ami bring home all
the treasures of the mines of (soleonde, yet without
beallh, where would be Ins happiness ! lie would
be iiiihcralde in llie midst of bis gold and his dia
monds; be would pine away in wretchedness mid
despair, and ho would exclaim with the wise man
of old, “ all is vanity and vexation of spirit." Mis
limbs are racked with pain and ke cannot res), bis
uppelilo in guns, and be loathes Ins food; Ins sto
mach is oppressed with nausea, and be turns siek
voming uxvny at t lie bounties of a munificent provi
dence. lie would give nil he is worth—nay, all Ihe
World—it ho laid it—for the poor but healthy man's
appetite.
“ I’lease give mo," said a hungry wretch to a
wealthy feeble man, “ please give me a sixpence to
buy me a morsel offend; I am almost starved !"
“ I would give a llioiisiiiid dollars for your appe
tite," said the rich man, us be bunded the hungry
one a dollar.
Os so much importance is health lo the enjoy
ment of life I
lint wherein, niotliinks I bear Ibe reader ash, sub
serves Ibis homily on so plain and hackneyed a sub
ject I Do we nut all know (bo value ol health 7
Do w e not nil abend In it uu one of (lie chief, if not
thechiofest concerns of otir mortal existence ! Do
wo not employ the means lo attain and preserve it ?
Do wo not lay out money—do wo not foe physi
cians—do wo not follow lheir advice—do wo not
sw allow their proscriptions 7
True—most true—gentle reader, thou doost all
things, wo dare say, and more Still, we cannot
believe our homily on liealth lo la* altogether unne
cessary. /Is iii morals, so in physic is it requisite
to have “ line upon line, and precept upon precept.”
Men in haalt.li ibrget that they may be sick , and
men in sickness do no I nlways employ the must ju
dicious means lo attain benllli.
Very true, Doctor—nir.n do not as you say always
pursue the right road to hoitlih. Now, I imow ol
some peoplo who are always dosing themselves
with physic, ami running lo iheduetorsiindiipulh
ecaries every day of their lives. They lake, I verily
believe, a earl load ol drugs in a year, and yet they
are not well after nil
Do you know llie reason 7
Why, yes, in my opinion there are two reasons.
In llie first puiee they take too iiineli medicine, mid
hi the second, lliey do not lako Iho right kind. I
used lo inaku the same mistake. Hot lately, that is
10 say for two or three years past, I’ve lot upon a
better plan. I lake Dr. Holers' Vegetable bilious
Tills, and I derive more liuuulil from one dollar laid
out in them, limn 1 used in paying lilly in any for
mer pursuit of beallh, besides saving a world of
nausea and disgust in swallowing mi enormous
qunntity'of medicines. Do you know Dr. Tolers?
Very well.
And have you ever taken Ins modi cine I i
I wore ii block head else. I
They toll mo ho is none of your quacks, who un
dertakes to mend and regulate llie inmiaii maehilio
without so iiiueh as a know lodge ol ils parts,
mid how lliey are put together. They say he un- ’
demands anatomy and physiology, I think they cult
them, and is ns familiar with botany and chemistry j
as I am with ihe road in mill.
Vou aro rightly inlbrniod. Dr. Peters is no em
piric. lie does not undertake what lie does not
understand, lie was regularly tired In the healing
art. Ho has spent years in lliu acquisition ol know
ledge; ho has devoted lonised to llie study ol llie *
human Iranie, and llie diseases lo which it is sub- 1
joet, and now ho is applying his acquisition In the '
relief ol suffering Immunity. I
lie does mil put liirlb Iho absurd claims often ad- 1
vanned by the inventors of putunl nostrums—name a
ly, that ol curing all diseases wnli a single pro
script ion ! Such u pretence he w ould deem about
as difficult to swallow as lo lake Ibe nostrums of
those who put it forth. There is no such medicine.
There is not, and never was, a naimeea for all dis
eases The Vegetable Bilious Tills pretend to no
■ueh miracle. Bui what is infinitely hotter lliey
effect xxbitl lliey nndcrluko They keep tho word
of pr uuisc lo llie sloiuiteh, mid the prima via vv Inch
they make to ihe ear and eye. And that indeed is
no slight recommendation. Nor arc llie complaints
to which these Tills are adapted low nor far be
tween. Tho disorders arising from n morbid stale
of ihe bde are, unfortunately, many, distressing and
fatal- A largo portion ol all the levers, especially
at the south ami in the marshy districts, arc owing
lo tins eai ISO, from iho distressing ague and fever,
which almost shakes asunder bte ami limli, to the
tearful “ Vellevv Jack," which seldom quits his vie |
mu without sundering soul and body ns he lakes
his leave-
Conversant from his previous practice, with dis
rase, in all its firms, w Inch originates from the dis- '
order of the bile, Dr. Peters was first led lo employ
Ins knowledge and experience in the preparation of
ix medicine which should prove efficacious in ibis
large class of diseases, xvhich should relieve llie ach
ing and llie di/./.y head, and restore llie nauseated
and loathing stomach, at Iho same lime (lull it pre
vented those more fatal elleels w hich are so apt lo
follow' from their imprudent neglect.
For lliis purpose he prepared with much care ami
nisi adaption to I lux pur|mse, (bo Vegetable Bilious
Pills, which he is happy lo say, from long experi
ence, ami the abundant testimony ol these xxho have
employed them have answered, more than answered
lim sanguine expectations.
It is not his own more assertion you are call
ed on to believe. It is not the ipse dmt of any single
man—though he xvas as great ns (iuleii ot llipisi
eralos —that yon are lo pin your Inilh upon Nei

11 by the moulli of Ixxo or three xxfinesses shall all
things be established"—are yon to lieheve in so
small a number only 7 A cloud of w.messes is be
fore yon. They are 100 numerous to bo easily
overlooked; they arc too intelligent lo be carelessly
heard; they are too respectable lo be slightly re
garded.
Believing the spontaneous testimony of those
w hoso experience is the best lost of the truth they
assert. Dr. Peters has thrown together in tho fol
lowing pages, a few of the many hundreds of testi
monials received from every quarter xxiierc his
pills haw come into use. They are left to speak
lor themselves. They arc the winds el these who
“speak what they do knew, and tes ify toxvhat
they have seen mid experienced."
