When Mr. Who’* name Was called, be did not :
eply, although hc was within the bar. After the
■all Mr. Wise rose and asked to be excused ham
roting. as he held it was a subject upon which it
vas improper for the House to act. Ihe Chair -
lecidcd that the request was not made in time Mr.
W, voted in tno Bllirmative.
The main questiun, being on the adoption ol
lie resolution was then pul, and decided as 10l- ,
owe, yeas 124 nays 74.
When Mr. Adams’ name was called, on the |
ibove decision, that gentleman rose; and, (nothing
taunted by the whirlwind and din of “ORDER !
JKDEK! ORDER!” which literally bawled a
ound his ears, awakeningeven the echoes ot that
csounding hall,) deliberately and firmly respond
id in those words : “ I hold the resolution to be
l vio dtion of the Constitution of the United
States, of the rights of my constituents and of
•he people of the United Stales to petition, and
ny own right to freedom of speech ns a member
of this House'’
Mr. Sawyer of N. C. and Mr. Wise of Va., j
rose and refused to vote at all on thaqucslion, not j
.[linking it a fitting subject fur legislative action
Mr. Adams then moved that 1 i, answer be en
lercd on the journal: and, the chair deciding that
t was not in Older —be moved to have Ins mo
ron and that decision of the Speaker enured.
And thus ended the contest for the tunc. May

In the House, the reference cf the Message was
once more taken up, in committee of the whole
—(Mr. Adams in the chair,) and after some squib
bing, of rather a mud throwing character, between
Duncan of Ohio, and Ewing of Indiana, Mr.
Uaucrwood went very ably into the cordial sup
port of Mr. Cushing's amendment, and examined
tile President's allusions, in the Message, seria
tim, as to the present condition of our ulliiiis.
Each department was shown to he full of errors
of administration,—and loudly calling for reform.
The Navy, the War, the Post Olfice, the Stale |

and abuses shown in a rnaste ly manner.
Mr. Sawyer of N. C. went into an elaborate j
and minute aeries ot allegations against tire man-1

upon Mr. Dickerson.
The Committee then rose, and after some
incidental business, the House adjourned, in a

Mr. Cnihbcrl, of Geo. Mr. Bencher and Ml. Wise j
spoke. They then adjourned to meet again at 7 j

from the slave holding States were present. Os
the Senators, I believe Mr. Clay and Benton were !
the only two absent. The debates were very n !
tcresUng, and the several propositions submitted
to the meeting discussed with animation but with
calmness. Mr. Minifco ol Ky. made a very able
speech—so did Mr. Preston and Mr. Crittenden.
—Messrs. Hives, and Calhoun also spoke arid
Mr. Calhoun of Ky.of the House also participa
ted in the discussion. The resolutions which
were presented by Mr. Patton to the house this
morning as noted above were adopted with great j
unanimity, and they then adjourned to meet again
in lire event of the house refusing to pass the re
solutions agreed on. The house Iras passed
them, ami there is therefore no necessity for
another meeting.

The ala-in spread rapidly, and in an incredibly

IMPORTANT FROM Sl'. EUSTAt’HE.
The troops took up their quuilers at St. Mar.in, j
during ilia night of Wednesday, and departed at j
about 7 o’clock yesterday morning toward St J
Euslache, but not in a direct tine, for it was un
derstood that tbe ice on the river in lb.it way,
was not sufficiently strong to bear '.tic weight of
so heavy a body as ihe'arnllery and cavalry. '
A detour was, in consequence, taken toward j
St Hose, where the ice was crossed from Isle s
Jesus to the main land. The line of march then „
proceeded upward, along the right hank of the
river, until (he troops approached tho village ol
St. Euslache; making a march from St. Marlin
of about twelve miles, whereas, in a direct line,
it would only consist ol about six or seven. ,
The Hoops were first filed upon by the rebels
from the chuich of St. Euslache, a considerable
lime before any position had been taken. Upon
coming within the proper range, two field-pieces
were planted on the north-east side of the church,
and began to play upon it in excellent style, j
while another field piece was sent round in icar j
of the village, ami stationed where it commanded 3
a street icadi g directly to the front door of the a
same edifice.
Tho three regiments and the cavalry, in the
meantime, made a circuit round the village in
the rear ; and look up positions to intercept the 1
rebels, when they should be compelled to aban- ,
don their position. The church having at length
been set on fire, the rebels were seen flying in I
every direction, hut not without many of them 1
having been killed and taken prisoners-.
Tho nunnery and presbytery, situated on cith
er side of the church, which were occupied by the ,
tebels, were also destroyed, as well as several olh- |
ler bouses in Ihe village, particularly these of j
j Scott and Chenier. 1
The loss on either side lias not been accurately 1
ascertained; but it is repotted that eighty of lire
rebels have been killed, and more than a bun- j
dred taken prisoners. Dr. J. 0. Chenier was
killed in tire yard of the-church. i
The commander-in-chief, Girod, and Fen-ol
Peltier, are said to have lakcn to fight, toward
St. Benofl. immediately after the first lire. On
the pait of the troops, wo have no accounts of any
having been killed except one man. ;
Mr. Gugy, while storming the saeristie, was 1
severely, but not dangerously wounded, in the <
left shoulder, tlie ball coming out at the right arm 1
The blaze arising from the burning bouses at St. j
Euslache, was distinctly seen last night, from
the rising ground in the rear of this city, toward
the old race course.
Having taking possession ofSl. EustaVlie, the 1
troops proceeded, early tliis morning, to St. Ben- (
j oil, or Grand Biule, where, it was said, the re- ,
bids were strongly tori died.
A report has gained general currency in town, j
that a doputalion from'the rebels at St. Benoit
had been sent in, demanding terms; to which the 1
commander of tho forces is said to have given for |
answer, that they must surrender at discretion,
lay down their arms, and give up their leaders,
Whether these terms have been complied with,
we have not yet learned.
