viavcnw a hi JULY 12, IMS A PREPARED STATEMENT Wednesday night, Savannah oncce again experienced racial vh olence. Both I and the Chatham County Crusade for Voters regret this deeply. Unfortunately at this time, the Negro people have no recourse but to go to the streets in our quest for freedom, justice and equality. The emotional groundwork for last night’s outburst was laid by tlie arbitrary and unjust jailing of liosea Williams. It was caused in the immediate instance by the unnecessary firing of tear gas bj the Savannah Police. Many of the demonstrators had bitter memories of the n'ght of June 19 when th$ same police gassed, beet and chased Negroes as they knelt and prayed. This tension packed altuatlon was touched off by the violence and brutality which the police ex ercised upon the demonstrator*. Women, children and peaceful demonstrators were kicked and struck. Tear gas was lobbed about needlessly; in one case a cannister was fired directly at a STAR EAST SIDE SUN., MON., TUES. WED. SUN., MON., TUES. WED. Benjamin Van Clarke CLARK OUT (Continued From Page 1) headed by Burke Marshall, haa the arrest under inveatiga- This arrest represents part of a conscious attempt at harassment of the leadership of the Voter Registration and Civil Rights Movement in Savannah. An attempt which began with my arrest on false charges — later dropped—and by my confinement for fifteen days on an eighty-one year old, rarely used, State law. The arreBt of Mr. Williams will not deter the Civil Rights Movement in Savannah, rather, I believe, it will accelerate the movement graphically demonstrating the cruel and arbitrary system of government and law enforce ment which segregation fosters. Resentment within the Negro community is, how ever, extremely high. I shall do my best to control these feelings, but it must be understood that the responsibility for Savannah’s welfare lies with those who perpetrated this unjust act.
