Pat# 2 THE CRUSADER, SAVANNAH, GEORGIA OCTOBER 17, 1M3OCT0B EDITORIAL The Courts Gamble With Our Future The future security, progress and growth of our com munity is being gambled with by our courts. Once again, Savannah is allowing herself to be hung up for ridicule. Since General Oglethorpe organized Savannah, it has maintained a national reputation for having the finest race relationship of any Southern city. This was false. One reason Savannah was able to create such dynamic false race statue was due to its large foreign population. Many of these constituents came from countries where the mental illness (Racial segregation) did not exist. Many others came from countries where they were a part of the depressed : therefort, one would think those persons would never participate in the destruction of human beings simply because of their color. Any sane-minded person, particularly Americans, would naturally predict these | persons would not only condone, but join and fully par ticipate with the Negro in their struggle for equal liberty and justice for all. Through the years Savannah has been able to main- j tain her national false race relation reputation. This was mainly due to the fact her Negroes have always accepted j racial inequalities, inferior educational facilities in com parison with the white, segregated public and even gov- j ernment opportunities, inferior recreational facilities, Ne gro leadership chosen-by the white man and the destruc- i tion of black manhood and womanhood. Through the . years Negroes have even allowed the white man to deny j their children an opportunity to fully develop and culti i vate their God-given talents. Even those that resist the immovable force of segregation and obtain an education have allowed the white man to deny them an equal op- j portunity to display their God-given, cultivated talents. Savannah’s superb national race relations reputation was challenged .Tune 1. 19G3 when a black bov, raised by an uneducated, poverty-stricken mother in East Liberty Lane bv the name of Benjamin Van Glarke. coached and i guided bv the fearful mind of TTosea L. Williams, a pro- ! duct of our segregated society, disturbed confused Ne groes and demanded that the white man preach and prac tice the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of Man and live bv those laws he constituted. Tt was a svnonvm of Tpivwl and Goliath. Tim Giant (Savannah’s Race Re lations) was fallen with momentum that agitated the earth. Once the tmth was known retrogression became a 1ivim r reality. Industrialists who had to plant their dol lar Bi'ls in Oh a 1 n a m fount'’’ withdrew; sightseers and tourists sliunnod the cifv as thou "’ll there wore a plague: | Wall Q< rect investors, holding Savannah Bonds, began! snipping; national news releases defined Savannah as the second most raciallv-torn eitv in our nation : a local judge committed an act of atrocitv; the right of the individual became a thing of tlio nast and the white power structure was shocked to their senses. A temporary settlement was reached. A neriod of tranquility ensued and Savannah began to tumble from a national ridiculous state of affairs. On October 2. 19f>3. Savannah began to regain her long lost ground when National and International news media highly publicized the integration of certain facili ties. Wall Street financiers holding her bonds began to regain consciousness, industrialists once again became in terested in her Dollar Bill plantation and Savannah’s Race Relation reputation began to iet upward nationally at su personic speed. News commentators throughout the na tion, not only praised Savannah, but advised the Birming ham’s, the Jackson. Mississippians, the Danville. Virgin-! ians, and the Cambridge, Maryland’s to go to Savannah ' and learn the secret of her miracle. The COURTS of Savannah kept pushing. Negro demonstrators continue to he tried, found guiltv and pun ished for a crime thev did not commit. Tt is the hope of those concerned that the Federal Courts will free Dio demonstrators, but this is a ganfhle. A gamble that the future of our citv cannot afford. At the present rat'’, the Court is mending out its justice. Demonstrators will have to make from two mouths to six and one-half years j in prison or nav fines from SI00 to $4,500 and servo pro bated sentences ranging from four months to twelve years. Tf these sentences stand, the future progress o^ Savannah will be damned. We can all pack our bags and find oi-ncri'Mc-ivo cities to live in. The damnation of Sa vannah will forever lie at the door-steos of an uniust court house. created and perpetuated by the office of the Soli citor General and the Courtroom attendant who sits up high in the swivel chair. THEY WINE AND DINE LIKE AMERICANS These are Ex-Jail Birds, well rested and showing the sign of victory after checking out of Savannah’s newly desegregated Hotels, Motels and Theaters. Each of these Freedom Fighters were arrested several times during the Crusade For Voter’s Recent Non-Violent protest demonstrations. The DESEGREGATORS thrilled the audience at one of the Crusade For Voters Mass Meetings by sharing their experiences while liv ing at the previously all-white establishment. Hosea (Their Leader) Williams said “I kept my promise. At our first Sunday Mass Meeting down town in Johnson Square, I promised you we would be served at these places before Christ had another Birthday. VOTER REGISTRA- j TION KILLS SEGREGA TION !
