MYSTERY OF ATLANTA
. 1
Atlanta, Ga, Mays.— 'We have
sufficient evidence to justify the cor
oner’s jury in holding L. M. Frank and
Newt Lee for further ifiyestigation by
the grand jury,”’ declared Chief of De
tectives Newport A. Lanford Monday
morning.
The detectives are still searching for
the mysterious "’girl in the red dress,”’
who stated in a store in Marietta last
Wednesday that she was with Mary
Phagan when she went to the Nationa]
Pencil Company factory on Forsyth
street Saturday a‘week ago to collectl
her wages for two davs’ labor. i
Detectives Starnes and Campbell
went to Merietta early in the morning,
Surday, responding to telephone infor-1
mation given the officers as the result
of the Journal story Sunday,
Many people, who believed that ' they
might be of assistance in loeating the
girl called at detective headquarters af
ter reading the story and as a result
Chief of Police J. L. Beavers joined the
‘detectives in his auto about 11 o’clock
‘Sunday morning.
| Chife Bevers stated on his return
that the efforts to find the girl of the
red dress had proved futile. This girl is
supposed to have stated that she went
to the factory with Mary Phagan and
waited outside while she went in to get
her money. .
Soon she was notified by two girls
who came down the steps that Mary
would be down in a few minutes. Later
according to the stery, a man came
down and told her that Mary said not
to wait as she would be busy half an
hour more.
The inquest into the death of Mary
Phagan will be resumed in pelice head
quarters this afternoon, If several new
and important witnesses give the testi
mony that is expected of them the in
vestigation so far as the coroner’s jury
is concerned will terminate by 6 o’clock.
Coroner Donohue was to hold a con
ference with Chief of Detective Lan
ford and Solicitor General Dorsey be
fore the inquest to deeide upon .he
witnesses who will be asked to testify.
i Because of significant statements
made by Newt Lee, the night watch
’man, it is regarded as probable that he
I will be recalled to the stand for a more
rigid questioning than+he received last
' Wednesday, when he teld the stoH of
his movements on the night that Mary
Phagan was slain.

INJUNGTION BILL FILED

il’eflfleners ~Allege County Commis-
Sloners Only Have the Right
; to Sign Bullding Contract,
Before Jndge Wm. B. Kent, ordinary
of Wheeler county, went to sign the
contract for the building of the court
house, which had been adyertised and
set for last Tuesday, some citizens of
«Glenwood and other parts of the county
filed a bill of injunction against him as
ordinary, alleging that he had no
authority as ordinary to_ sign the con
tract for the - purpose of building the
court house. A
It is also contended that the county
‘commissioners only have the right and
power to sign a contract to build the
court house. It is also claimed by
others that the bill creating Wheeler
county named in the same certain of
{ficers, among them the county com
missioners, but did not give the said
| commissioners any power to act, and
fusther that the said commissioners
{cannot act until a special act of the
| general assembly is enacted, naming
| their powers and duties.
Judge E. D. Graham set the hearing
| at 9 o’clock on the 17tk inst., in Mcßae.
In the meantime worx on the court
| house is stopped awaiting orders of
| the judge.
The grand jury of Wheeler county,
i at its last session, recommended that
,|a court house and jail be built, and
.| Judge Graham in his first charge to the
grand jury of Wheeler county laid
| Bpecial stress upon the necessity of
Ipublic buildings, in keeping with the
times and the necessities of the people
,‘and county.

Kent Spring’s

s e 1
| Kent Spring Is the name of the little
| boiling spring, located just under the‘
, | hill and about one hundred yards from
| the proposed site for Wheeler’s conrt‘
| house. It is surprising to know the
number ot people thut visit this spring
;Idaily and drink from its fountam of
| pure and refreshing water. Some take
v!with them buckets, while others take
.| bottles and when they have satisfied
.!their thirst fully, they fill their vessels
v;and homeward start.
~ Judge Kent has ordered piping which
1 he will have sunk down several feet in
| the earth, and will have the surround
|ing grounds dug out and the under
| growth cleared away, making it more
’convenien}: and otherwise beautify
,! the spring that flows this pure and
.Iheslthful water. The land surround
| ing the spring is owned by Judge Kent
, (and it is his intention to build a dam
; [ below the spring and harness the water
_! | sufficiently to form a bathing pool. He
' ‘ also intends having a ball park laid ofl
"and fenced in for the accommodation
' of those who enjor this kind of sport,
he being a great base ball enthusiast.
} Other improvements will be added
| which some day will make Kent Spring
| famous. We can’t think of anything
g that will be more attractive and bene
ficial to the town of Alamo than for
g Judge Kedt to actually put in opera
g tion all of these plans.

ROUTE NO. 2 1§
PETITIONED FOR.
A petition has been circulated and
has been signed by patrons along the
proposed route, asking the fourth as
sistant postmaster at Washington, to
send an inspector to lay out a rural
route leading from Alamo, in a south
easterly direction, crossing Alligator
creek on Rye-Croft bridge. The neces
sary number of signatures have been
secured and the papers sent to Washing
ton. This route would be a great con
venience to the people along the pro
posed route. It would mean a big in
crease in the already increasing busi
ness of this office.
Alamo only has one route going out
from this point, and route No. 2 would
be hailed with delight. Wheeler has
very few towns in its bounds and a
lot of mail is brought in the county
from offices out of the county, wherein
if we had a sufficient number of rural
routes going out from this office, it
could all be held in the county. We
need more routes m the county. It
would bring us in closer touch with
everybody and eyerything.
A Notice to the Public,
I have opened up a mercantile
business in Alamo for the mutual
advantage of all who come and
