M*.‘ West, was at ■ liberty to suggestj any hud wc. would vote for them, we not knowing any or caring for tiny. A few days after this talk we came to town from our home in the country Where wc then-lived anti Mr, -West bsked" us In 'txraipiihnCc with our hgreemeut to eigu Borne paper, for Maj, Gary forjudge, and wc did so (without even: veadlug it and we guess Xhat is the Cndbrsemeht published by l ‘An’AugusUt Friend.’* Wt! did know "ihen that there woe such a person the world as Maj. Gary and thut was all. Wc were -born and reared *Woshingtoii bounty ftbd we had been •1u thb'AbguW circuit only a few lyears ln 1898—beuce we could not ^have known much of Maj. Gary. We 'had never seen him, knew nothing 'of life‘ability bfi n tovtyfr,* nothing Vif his‘pfivAth‘life'and character {'and ! -Ve signed it hot ns an endorsement 'but sff au accommodation* to our 'friend Mr. West withclil asking any* Liuestion whatever'. W<5 hatf never surprise and dismay- However, the democratic caucus came to our relief nnd saved ub from the humiliation and taunts of our friends who bad heard ns denounce the Augusta ring and Boykin Wright, its leader, by shutting us out aud not allowing us to vote. Another thing, when we got up in Atlanta and saw the JlfaJ. ho was an older looking man than we expected, and lie is four years older now than then. He has been out of the active practice for the IhbI six or eight years, and wc challenge you to dispute it from the records of the courts of Richmond county. Why do you not answer this? Wc knew nothing of the Maj. in 1898 and all wc Bay abotit endorsing him will be certified to by lion. John T; West— a Gary man, if necessary | and the more wc lfcarn of the Maj. tho far ther off from him wc get, If wc had known ns much in 1898 as we know now we would have excepted him with our friend Mr, West. Wo wnnt it distinctly understood that wo arc ugainet the Augusta ling and we will join hands with any man or set of men to bring about reform iu Augusta politics or any other politics. We think it poor policy to join iu with a crowd of acknowledg ed corrupt politicians to elect their man and ever expect to purify poli tics. In bther Words, if wc v/anted an honest nmn to look after business for US, we would be sure hot to hire a ibati who associated with dishonest people. We would be like Geh. Bob Toombs’ little boy and the pet aiiecp, wc might like him pcihaps but not his company. Wc are hot supporting Ml'. Alex ander bocauso of any friendship to ward him. It is hot a question of friendship but of fitness for the posi tion that impels us to support Mr. Alexander. We had nbver ffiet hftb Until wc had tiiade up out minds to support him. We Hrc not supporting him for a political pull with the ex pectation of being puid back bv Jnn olUcc. Wc arc for the better man, aud we liaVc no jiolitlcril favdiS to ask at the bauds of cither side.
