It is ■ Muectel that a foundry ha» been estab lished on the north side of Sebastopol, and that the shot thrown by us into the town and fortiflc itions are by ita means tamed to account against us. The calibre of the Kus4an guns is greater as compared with the calibre of our guns of relative size, s<> that we are unable to use the Russian shot, and they could u-o ours, only with oonsid e-af>'« 'n'»>r*r and accuracy on ac count of the windage. June 1«.—i'oe bombardment opened a' break of day. A rocket from one of the f i-enoh lotteries on the right of Careening ay was the signal, and was followed im mediately hv a heavy fire, which began at •he right, and soon extended along the lines as fur as the left of the Ureerthill attack.— The French batteries beyond it did not open a general fire. The fire which now opened was of tremendous power, and was carried on with the utmost energy; every one seem ed •<> agree that, if canon could conquer the Russian fortifications, they were now dimm ed to destruction. The Selingkinck Re doubt—the “Redoubte Blanche,” as the French have called it, from its white para pets—had tieeo fully armed, an well as the Sliuiieloii; and both were new pouring a c mtiuuou* fire into the batteries, which ap pear as if alxtve the shore on the west of Careening Bay and into the M&lakuff Tow er works. 7 A. M.—The fire has continued to rage furiously. The Redan is nearly silent; one gun o|ieiis from it occasionally. Four guns are still open in the works on the Malakoflf hill, two in the Kormloff Bastion before the ruin of the tower, and two in the battery on the right (our left) of it. The French have appeared to suffer severely in the redoubt of the Mntnelon Vert; shells from the shipping, from the Marine batteries, and fmm some work which appears to be be hind the Malakoff Tower, have been con stantly falling in and about the work. 10 A. M.—The fire both on our side and that of the French has slackened during the last half hour. The Russian batteries are almost silent, one gun is fired from the Round Tower about every ten minutes.— The Redan has not fired for nearly three qunrteis of an hour. 2 P. M.—The fire has suddenly assumed redoubled energy. The French have open ed all their batteries on the left. The lines of lotteries are enveloped in a shifting at mosphere of smoke, through which heavy peals of thunder are unceasingly rolling.— Some of the Russian batteries seem to have become imbued with fresh vigor. The at mosphere seems to lie partaking in the gen eral revulsion. Clouds have gathered on all sides. Frequent whirlwinds are passing over the camp, and high columns of dust are drawn up in their vortices. The wind is veering round to the westward, and, thu’ moving with considerable velocity, affords no refreshing relief to the sun’s heat: on the contrary, it has all the oppressive, close character of the sirocco. The monuments beyond the Tchernaya seem to echo more loudly the roar of the guns; the ground under f(*ot trembles. The French have received notice that it is probable the as sault will take place at 4 this afternoon. 10 P. M.—The fire from the batteries was kept up with energy throughout the after noon. and lasted till the daylight disappear ed. At an early hour this morning mus ketry, followed by the reports of heavy guns was heard among the hills beyond Tchorgoun, and shortly after 1 o’clock in the afternoon a few guns were heard in the dirction of Mackenzie’s farm. It is proba ble that a portion of the force in the plain have lieen in-iking a recon nuisance. The men’s rations were ordered to be issued tins afternoon for to-morrow, and it is no longer a secret that a grand attack is contemplated against the whole of the bat teries, from the Malakoff to the B trrack 'nailery, defending the Karabelnaia suburb. The utmost confidence is expressed by the highest authorities of success. The French are to storm the Malakoflf hill and works with a total force of 25.000; the b nglish the Redan and (harden batteries, with 8,000 troops. Shortly before 3 A. M., the attacking coluoins supports, and reserves, being in their res|>ective positions in the trenches, and just as the batteries were expected to o|>en in lull force, a sudden fire of musketry Ijetween the Malekoff works and the Mtuue- lon attracted universal attention. The long lines of ambulance mules of the French were only commencing to thread their way through the ravines to the'scene of intended attack, the leading troop of the cavalry ex- jiectcd from below was just appearing in sight, the re-erve of Guards and lligli- laoders li.id not yet arrived. A musketry attack was least ofnlI expected at that hour. The Russians had advanced by the left of the Malak-If liiil. and taking advantage of the uncertain light of the early dawn, had made a sortie against the French in their advanced trenches on the Mameloii. The sortie was reoul-ed, and had it ended here, the chief points in the programme in the day's events need not have lieen interfered with. Rot ny a fatal mistake the success in repelling the sortie was at once followed up, and seizing the temporary advantage, the repulse lavaine converted into an attack anon the Malakoff itself. Some of the French troops mounted the hill, others pur- -uing the Russians who had made the sor tie. followed them to the gorge of the work, and thu- actually gained admission into the w<>rx itself Now the error was discovered; the Rossi in< showed themselves in over- powering numbers, and hut few of our al lies who had gained admission into the works of the Malakoff effected their escape. At the same time, the enemy crowded upon the para|>ets, and poured a deadly rifle fire into the troops attempting to mount the hill, while grape and canister were discharged from field pieces placed in commanding po- xitions. Our allies were absolutely forced to retire within the protection of their ad vanced trench. Before this shelter had i -een obtained, and while the troops were fighting within and around the Malakoff, the flag was hoisted in the eight gun bat tery. Lite in the day, previous the arrange ment respecting; the composition of the storming column under Colonel Lysons had been changed. Instead of 200 men from the 23d Fusiliers and 200 men from the 34t!> Regiment, the column was to consist wholly of men of the 34th Regiment, the r.uml*er remaining the same. This in volved other changes in the composition of the support and working parties. The storming column from the Fourth Division remained as before arranged. The signal for the assault was no sooner given than it was perceived, and at once these brave men left their shelter in the trenches. Just what the Russians were waiting for; the columns had no sooner shown themselves, than the fire from above opened. It was not to be counted by guns—it was a raging storm, an incessant rain of grape and rifle balls. The dead and wounded strewed the ground; it was a miracle how any escaped. 0>t the left Colonel Shadforth had fallen, on the right. Colonel Lysons, wounded in the knee, found himself close to the deep fosse, but, out of his four hundred, with not more than forty around him. Neither the wool sacks nor the ladders were at hand, hut that was a matter of little import for the pars ets were covered with dense lines of the en iy, and <>n every side the deadly grape swept down its victims. The Redan was filled with troops. Supports sent to the storming parties could not lie of any avail, and noth ing was left but to retire, with the hope of renewing the attack at a more seasonable opportunity. The Russians must have suffered severely, for the shot and shell fell thickly in the Malakoff batteries and Redan, while the enemy crowded the works. About 5 A. M., some heavy firing was heard on the extreme left, and it was gener ally attributed to broadsides from our fleet. A hope was suddenly felt that they had forced their way through the sunken ships at the mouth of the roadstead, and would soon divert the fire from the Russian steam ers. which were making severe havoc in the French columns near the Mamelon. But in a short time the fire ceased, and the hope wm dissipated. IT II 'hte, was al.-*o listened . for, but nothing was heard and it has since j S"jfi£U2££ been ascertained that it did not take place. ‘ - - Two Russian battalions crossed from the north side after the attack had commenced. The detachments of cavalry which has been ordered up to the front, and which it was supposed had been reserved for protecting •ur right flank against any approach of the enemy, or assisting in some movement in that direction, as it turned out, were intend ed only to prevent spectators from advanci ng to obtain a view of the engagement.— They extended themselves in a line across the sloping ground from Greenhiil to the Careening Bay ravine, and kept liack from passing this barrier many an anxious visi tor from Balaklava aud elsewhere. Two great mistakes appear to have influ enced the whole of this attack. The first was by permitting the enemy by the early sortie to divert us from the original plan of the undertatking; the secoud overconfidence in our own strength and resources compar ed with those of the enemy. Had the bom bardment from the batteries have taken place, the enemy would probably hare sup posed it would continue the whole day, and withdrawn a great part of his troops for their security from the neighborhood of the works. It might be presumed that the ene mv would not have made the attack against the French at the Mamelon without having large reserves within reach. To attack the Redan with two storming columns of 400 men each, appears to have lieen a hopeless case; the ditch was deep and broad. the abattis dense, and there were at least 5000 men within the work. The sailors, if em ployed in the undertaking, might perhaps been more useful otherwise than in carry ing the ladders. With their comrades fall ing about them, and under the excitement of getting at the enemy, the ladders were not carried to the place intended. The fail ure is more than ever to be regretted at the present moment, when, beyond all doubt, the spirit of the enemy had become depress ed by their reverses in the Sea of Azoff. June 19.—The success of yesterday in duced the enemy last night to make a sortie in force against our advanced works and those of the French. At half past twelve o’clock a tremendous fire of musketry open ed, and the divisions in front were called under arms. The fire ceased, however, without their assistance being required. No particulars arc known of the fact of the Russians being gallantly repulsed. Their loss must have been great, as they retired from the fire of the batteries. The Guard and Highlanders did the greater part of the trench duties on the right attack. Another letter says;—“Such, in a few words, is the reverse which we have met with to-day—the fortieth anniversary of Waterloo. If report is to be believed, the day had been waited for, to wipe out the last trankling memories of the great Bel gian field, and cement our new sympathies, by a hand-in-hand victory over a common foe. Last night, not a man in either camp doubted the certainty of our success; and yet failure has fallen on us like a thunder clap after all. The blame, however, lies not so much with Lord Raglan as with Sir George Brown, who generally commanded, and his brigade officers; the last especially have blundered in a manner which is as surprising as it has been disastrous, and we have, in consequence, l«>st as many officers and men as would have gained a pitched battle in the field. Of the former I may mention Gen. Sir John Campbell, whose head was knocked off with a round shot; Lord West, lieutenant colonel of the 20th: Col. Yea, of the 7th Fusileers, first wound ed, and afterwards killed and stripped nak ed; and Captain Lee, of the 2lst; besides many others killed and wounded. I may just mention that much of the grape fired was wooden, used either through a scarcity of the metalic article, or to scatter widely at a short range, as was that of this morn ing, whilst the men were under fire. Seve ral of the buried infernal machines also ex ploded during the morning, and, though not fatally destructive to any one, they inflicted serious personal injuries on several, both of the officers and men. RHODE’S FEVER AND AGUE CURE, Or, Nature's Invaluable Specific, F OR the prevention aud cure of luteriniiUnt ami Remittent Fevers, Fever and Ague, Chills anu Fever, Dumb Ague, General Debility, Nighi Sweats, and all other forms of disease which bavi a common origin in Malariu or Miasma. The sub tie atmospheric poison which at certain seasons i.- unavoida* ly inhaled at every breath, is tbe same in character wherever it exists,—North, South, East or West,—and will every where yield to this newly discovered antidote, which is claimed to be the greatest discovery in medicine ever made. This specific is so harmless that it may be taken by persons of erery age, sex or condition and it will not substitute for one disease others still worse, as is too often the result in the treatment by Quinine, Vlercury, Arsenic, and other poisonous or deleterious drugs, not a particle of any of which is admitted into this preparation. Tbe proprietor distinctly claims these extraoidi- nary results from the use of this natural antidote to Malaria. It will entirely protect any resident or traveler even in tbe most sickly or swampy localities, fron- any Ague, or Bilions disease whatever, or any in- jury from constantly inhaling Malaria or Miasma. It will instantly check the Ague in persons wb< have suffered for any length of time, from one day to twenty yearB, so that they need never hnvi- another chill, by continuing its use according to directions. It will immediately rel'-eve all distressing results of Billious or Ague disease, such as general debil ity, night sweats, Ac. The patient at once begins to recover appetite and strength, and continues until a permanent and radical cure is effected. Finally, its use will banish Fever and Ague from families and all classes. Farmers and all laboring men by adopting it as a preventive will be free from Ague or Billious attacks in that sea son of the year which, while it is the most sickly, is the most valuable one to them. One or two bottles will answer for ordinary cas es, some may require more. Directions printed in German,French and Spau- ish, accompany each bottle. Prioe One Dollar. Liberal discounts made to the trade. Trade circulars fowarded on application, and the article will be consigned on liberal terms to re sponsible parties in every section of the country.
