O, what shall we do wltlf the queerest of boys *
He looks with disdain on the weakness of toys;
While comrades aro playing, he never will budgo.
But he sitf In a corner as grim as a Judge.
Ho sighs fora cane, and wants a high hat;
He pints for a vest, and a watch, and all that;
He prattled of shaving, when school days began.
This dear little, odd little, dry little man I
He promises mother a house and some laud.
Anti twenty-live servants, or more, to conimnnd;
He keeps his own trunk, on his own little shelf,
And he writes funny letters, and all to himself.
His age—would you think It f—Is only Just four;
You'd say, by his ways, he was forty, or more;
He begs to sit up, when the rest go to bed—
Say, what’s to be done with this wise little head T
He has a wee sister, who's Just come to town;
He came, and he looked at her In her white gown;
Then bode her “ good morning”—he made It a point .
To show that Ills nose wasn’t put out of Joint I
Ho talks of a gnu, and a pistol that shoots;
, His feelings nre strongon the subject of boots;
They call lilm “ old-fashioned,’’ and so let him stay
As long as lie's good. In the old-fashioned way!
Signal Service of flic United States iu
the West Indies.
Special instructions are given for the hur
ricane season to forward timely notices for
the benefit of the shipping interests of the
North Atlantic and Gulf coasts from many
points in the West Indies. The chief signal
officer sayssuch information, even if several
days old, may be very valuable.
Tho hurricane reported last August north
of St. Thomas was five days in reaching the
Georgia and South Carolina coasts; and the
disastrous hurricane of August 1873, was
known on the 18th of August at St. Thomas,
a week before the damage was done on the
American coast, and on the 21st the rest
dents of the Bermudas were fully aware of
its existence, and could have foretold its
track.
Thus, by timely warning from these out
posts in the hurricane track, you may be
the means, through the Signal Service of the
United States, of averting danger and dis
aster; of saving life and property along our
coasts; and of preventing vessels going to
sea from sailing into the track of these dread
ful storms.
