THE SOUTHERN WORLD, JULY 15,1882. 13 jieople represented moved, talked, laughed and cried just like real people. The scene was that of a dining-room in which a family was gathered around the table. “That’s our house!” exclaimed May. “ Yes, and there's Mamma, and Fapa, Clara, and everybody else—and me, too. How strange! ” As she spoke a petulant voice cried out, “ Now, I want that big sugar cake! ” The voice came from May in the picture. “Don’t be selfish, dear," said Mamma in the picture. “ I want it," whined Mny several times. “ I supjKjse slic’d have to have it, for peace sake,” said Mamma. “No, indeed, she shall not,” interposed l’apa; “ give the cake to Susie.” Thereupon Mav began to kick and scream so hard, thal Papa carried her from the room. The second picture showed the same little girl quarreling with a very small boy about a trifling toy. Finally she seized the toy, knocked the little fellow over in the strug gle, and ran away, without even stopping to see if he were hurt. A third picture displayed another in stance, in which the selfish child was shown off to very bod advantage. Indeed, a fourth, fifth, and sixth, represented some naughty action of the same little girl. “Howdid you like it?" asked the strange lady, when the entertainment was over. “ It was all me,” replied Mary, looking very much ashamed. The fact was, the scenes exhibited had really occurred at Mary's home during the past week, and, of course, Mary had been the principal actor. And now that she had seen herself as others saw her, she realized wlmt a very wicked girl she was. “ Will you try to have a better panorama, next time?” asked the lady, kindly. “ Yes, ma’am, I will,” May said earnestly; and then she began to rub her eyes, and the hall disappeared, and her guide too; and the little girl found that she was still lying in her bed—the panorama had been ail a dream. Dut Mary never forgot that dream. It did her more good than the severest scolding could have done. So she tells us now, for that happened a great many years ago, and little May has grown to be a sweet old lady, Insects as Talk cm. “Two ants,” says Buchner, "when they are talking together, stand with their heads opposite to each other, working their sens! live feelers in the liveliest manner, and tap ping each other’s head.” Numerous exam pies prove that they are able in this way to make mutual communications and even on certain definite subjects. " I have often,” says the English naturalist, Jesse, “placed a small greeu caterpillar in the neighborhood of an ant’s nest. It is immediately seized by an ant, which calls in the assistance of a friend after ineffectual efforts to drag the caterpillar into the nest. It can be easily seen that the little creatures hold a conver sation by means of their feelers, and this being ended they repair together to the caterpillar in order to draw it into the nest by their united strength. Further, I have observed the meeting of ants on their way to and from their nests. They stop, touch each other with their feelings, and appear to hold a conversation, which, I have good reason to suppose, refers to the best ground for food." Hague writes a letter to Darwin that he one day killed with his fingers uumbv of ants who came every day from hole in the wall to some plants standing on the chimney piece. He had tried the effect of brushing them away, but it was of no use, and the consequence of the slaughter was that the ants who were on their way ini mediately turned back und tried to persuade their companions, who were not yet aware of their danger, to turn back also. A short conversation ensued between the ants, which, however, did not result in an imme diate return, for those who had just left the nest convinced themselves of the truth of the re{>ort. Curtis Guild, in “Abroad Again” gives many bloody recollections of the Colosseum but he says amid them all comes to us record of another character, that of a prac tical joke that is recorded to have been per petrated by the Emperor Gallienus, son of Valerian. The story runs that the empe' ror’s wife, having been cheated by the jew- eller, and demanded a terrible punishment upon him, and one that should be a warn ing to all jewellers in future of the danger of cheating an empress. Gallienus assented the fellow was arresetd and sentenced to be thrown to the wild beasts in the arena. He was dragged there, half dead with fright, when the next games took place, and at the appointed time, when his part of the performance was to occur, was thrust forth into the ring, where half-fainting with ter ror be sank down upon the red sand as the bronze portculluB of the wild bcusts’ den was hoisted, when instead of a hungry lion springing upon him, or a terrible tiger leap ing forth, out walked an old hen 1 In reply to the indignant demand for an explanation by the empress, her imperial consort de clared that to be simple; for as the man had according to her account, terribly cheated her, so he had been terribly cheated in re turn. A Missouri woman wns astounded when a man took her suddenly In his arms and jumped into a pond with her; but grateful when she learned that her dress had been in a blaze, which the leap extinguished.
