THE SOUTHERN WORLD, AUGUST 1, 1882. 15 Ten noes are better than one lie. God keep you from “ It is too late." Lying and gossiping go hand in hand. Egoism is an ism with I at the center. Abate two-thirds of all the reports you hear. There is a woman at the beginning of all great things. Poverty is in want of much, but avarice of everything. The winner is he who gives himself to his work, body and soul. Adversity links men together; prosperity is apt to scatter them. Better be dead and forgotten, than living in shame and dishonor. Time divided is never long, and regularity abridges all things. Those who plot the destruction of others often fall themselves. In almost everything experience is more valuable than precept. The greatest of all faults, I should say, i» to be conscious of none. If you wish to remove avarice, you must remove its mother, luxury. If his widow survives him, the unfortun ate woman is worthy of all pity. Philosophy is a good horse in the stable, but an arrant jade on a journey. A good time to offer your hand toa lady— when she is getting out of a car. No pleasure is comparable to the standing upon the vantage ground of truth. A woman's features are less disfigured by her age at 60, than by her rage at 20. The bell never rings of itself; unlesssome one handles or moves it, it is dumb. Where love exists not, even though it be in a palace, happiness can never come. Women travel to see what is talked about, men to talk about what has been seen. A life spent worthily should be measured by a nobler line, by deeds—not words. The most important part of every busi ness is to know what ought to be done. It often happens that worthless people are merely people who are worth knowing. Some people have great knowledge of so ciety and little knowledge of mankind. To enjoy the pleasure of wealth, you should first experience the fatigue of labor. Envy is blind and knows nothing except how to depreciate the excellencies of others. Prayer without watching is hypocrisy; and watching without prayer is presump tion. No evil propensity of humanity is so pow erful that it may not be subdued by discip line. The charities that soothe and heal, and bless, are scattered at the feet of man like flowers. Love is a queer thing, and so is happiness. To enjoy either completely, it has to be shared. There is so much to lament in the world in which we live that I can spare no pang for the past. To be useful, have confidence. Fields are won by those who firmly believe in the winning. The divine in its revelation can be known only by means of the divine in man, that is allied to it. The Inter-Ocean notes the alleged fact that the fashionably magazines never show styles for fat girls. Some of the young ladies who go to Flor ida bring home young alligators. Olliers se cure husbands. She told him that she could read his mind like an open book, and then softly added, “Blank-book.” While American girls are marrying Eng lishmen, English girls are finding favor in Oriental countries. To the generous mind the heaviest debt is that of gratitude, when it is not in our power to repay it. Austin, Nevada, squaws wear boots, pa tronize the boot-blacking stands, and pay ten cents for a shine. I have learned again what I have often learned before—that you should novcr take anything for granted. Give not reins to your inflamed passions; take time and a little delay; impetuosity manages all things badly. In life it is difficult to say who do you the most mischief, enemies with the worst in tentions, or friends with the best. Posthumous charities are the very essence of selfishness, when bequeathed by those who, when alive, would part with nothing. A young lady of Duchess county, N. Y., has been made insane by the knowledge that her betrothed, a bank book-keeper, is a de faulter. A divided “hygienic skirt"—whatever that may be—is the new garment recom mended to English women by the advocates of scientific dress. It is a bad thing to be too happy. It makes the mind grow fat and lazy. Trouble is a capital springroedicine for keeping the brain healthy and brisk. At twenty man is less a lover of woman than of women; he is more in love with the sex than with the individual, no matter bow charming she may be. Mary Clemmer says that only one girl in five hundred can be happy as a clergyman’s wife. She tried it, and didn’t get to see a circus for eleven years. Lately in London, England, a medical so ciety obtained evidence of severe lead-pois oning having been caused by the use of fashionable “hair-washes,” Nothing makes a woman crazier than to plant mignonette, and, when it comes up, to ascertain that the seedsman put cabbage seed into the wrong envelope. It was once said of the French authoress, George Sand(Mme. Dudevant) that her heart was like a cemetery, where one could see only the crosses of those she had loved. In charity it may be better to give than to receive; but in kissing it is about equal. Hereafter women may vote at elections for trustees of Methodist Episcopal churches in Connecticut, HOW TO SHOP ECONOMICALLY AT LOWEST NEW YOKE PRICES.
