Reynard in tlie Poultry Yard.
The tableau presented on this page is
a striking one and illustrates a fable.
One day as Sir Richard Chanticleer
and hiB family were taking a stroll in the
woods a strange spectacle attracted their
attention. Lying with his head prone
upon the ground, with eyes closed and
hin no perceptible signs of breathing, and
• t»«id feet stiff and high up raised was a
denix.cn of the forest. Long did Chanti
cleer gaze upon the scene, a suspicion
jaws, and her comrades saw a sudden
leap and heard her last despairing cry
as she was carried off by the sly old fox
to his quarters. Sir Chanticleer observ
ed that he smelt no decaying corpse and
feared it was a case of deception.
This fable is not without its moral.
Vice is ever deceptive, and often puts on
an aspect of harmlessness that beguiles
the unsuspecting.
The “ Old Play ” says:
“All live by seeming,
Aye, and religion, too, shall strive in vatu
To turn tho headlong torrent."
Avoid all appearance of evil. Shun
everything seemingly good or harmless
that you do not know to be good or
harmless.

lurking in his brain that there was some
thing wrong, and*doubting the reality of
the seeming death. The curiosity of the
females of his family was excited and
suggested the propriety of a close scru
tiny. Sir Chanticleer wisely remarked
that he feared that there waB danger in
such a course.and succeeded in getting
them to leave tho spot. Next day they
saw the same sight and so on for several
days, until all their fears were removed,
and day by day, they closer drew nearer

But this is not a fair judgment as an-
