girls head coach Cassandra
Wilson. “I think the game
went well, free throws were
the difference in the game.”
Making the All-Tournament
team were Jahive Hubbard
and Trycee Brown. Hubbard
and Brown had 12 points each
in their final games of the
tournament.
While Brown’s points led her
team in the championship
game, Hubbard was second in
scoring to Quintarius Everett
who had 13 points in the con
solation game.
“It was kind of a surprise
but Coach always told me to
just play to my level, to just
keep stepping it up,” said
Hubbard.
The Lady Eagles led the first
quarter of the championship
game, 12 : 9 over the Lady
Trojans.
The Lady Trojans then
turned up the wick and
outscored the Lady Eagles 15-
5 in the second quarter.
The Lady Eagles fared no
better in the second half as
Peach County went on a seven
point run to end the third
quarter and again, outscore
the Lady Eagles, 8-12.

Breaking open a tight contest
towards the end of the first half,
the Eagles parlayed a one point
deficit into a 52-37 advantage
with 3:19 remaining in the
game courtesy of a 30-14 run.
The Cougars would not go
quietly, however, as they fought
back with a 16-5 run of their
own to trim the lead to 57-53
with 42.1 seconds left on the
clock.
“Those things happen with a
young team,” Smith said.
Northside answered the rest
of the way to secure the win.
“We had some guys step up,”
Smith said.

three quarters, the Lady
Eagles were by no means out
of the game.
With just one minute
remaining, the Lady Eagles
trailed 39-40.
But the Lady Trojans passed
the ball superbly, avoiding
fouls and burning precious
seconds off the clock.
Finally, Wilson caught
Jennifer Smith, fouled her and
sent her to the free throw line
where Smith sank both shots.
Upon regaining possession
of the ball Wilson was fouled
and went 0-2 from the line
missing a chance to move the
Lady Eagles back within one
point of the tie.
Just two seconds later, with
31 seconds remaining,
Brittany Riley was sent to
the line for Northside, and she
too missed her shots.
From there on out the Lady
Eagles could only delay the
inevitable by fouling, and hope
that the Lady Trojans would
miss their shots from the line.
The Lady Trojans increased
the lead, from the line alone,
out to five points interrupted
only by the field goal of
Northside’s Quantisha Wynn.
While the girls were forced
high 33 points to pace the
Eagles as Jason Bell scored 15
points and Quinterius Everette
added 12 points.
The news wasn’t all rosy for
Northside as starter Anthony
Butler went down with a
injured ankle.
“I’ve seen a few of those and
it looks like a 10 dayer,” said
Smith referring the time he
expects Butler to be out. “We’re
hoping for the best and hope
I’m wrong.”
Shannon Stillman stepped in
with eight points in place of
Butler.
“Shannon came in and really
stepped up for us,” Smith said.

The Eagles started off the
second half trailing, 28-30 to
the Warriors.
The Eagles began the second
quarter, then, with an eight
point run that gave Northside
the lead, which they would
hold for the remainder of the
game.
“We just weren’t playing and
at halftime we came in and
had a heart to heart,” said
Northside head coach Kevin
Smith.
“We came out in the third
quarter and our intensity level
was way up.”
Butler began the run with a
simple field goal. Butler and
his teammates would end the
quarter with another run, of
seven points.
The Eagles outscored the
Warriors in the third quarter
22-10.
The fourth quarter began
with a run of six points fol
lowed by a sequenced scoring
pattern for the rest of the
game.
The pattern saw each team
score in 30-45 second intervals
as neither team had runs or
lopsided possession of the ball.
The Eagles would score and
“It’s nice to see some of the new
guys contributing. Hopefully we
are starting to see some depth.”
The Lady Eagles, in contrast,
saw most of the drama in their
encounter early on as the Lady
Cougars jumped out to a 8-2
lead the first 4:20 of the first
quarter.
Northside responded with a
15-8 run of its own to grab a
lead that would never be relin
quished.
“Our offense was very good
tonight and we just hung in
after the beginning,” Northside
girls head coach Cassandra

and started playing our game.”

with a score of 66-53.
The Eagles lost to Peach

score of 46-53.
Quintarius Everett led his
team with 17 points and was

The Lady Eagles defeated

The Lady Eagles came back

The Lady Eagles would
outscored their foes 30-18 the
rest of the night to gradually

The Knights led the Bears
34-33 with 1:54 remaining
but after Brighton’s missed
shot, Northern came up with
a put-back to give the Bears
the lead for good.
Graham added two points
from the free throw line and
Northern came down with a
dunk as 51 seconds remained
in the game.
Antroun McDaniel added
two points to the Knights
score but those points were
canceled out as Graham
added two from the free
throw line with just 13 sec
onds remaining.
Woodard capped . the
Knights scoring with two
points to make the final score
41-38.
Terrell Terry did foul out
with two seconds on the
clock, sending Graham to the
line one more time.
Graham missed his shots
but it didn’t matter as the
time ran out with the Bears
still in the lead.
“We just weren’t ready to
play in the first half and
that,s why we were behind
1,9-12,” said Houston Countv
head coach Greg Nix. “Finally
at halftime we talked about*
running our system and doing
the dirty work.”
The Knights outscored the
Bears in the first quarter 11-
7. The Knights also won the
tip off and scored first.
The Knights then outscored
the Bears in the second quar
ter 8-5.
It wasn’t until the third
quarter, when the Bears went
to a zone defense, that the
Knights sword became a but
ter knife.
The Bears, who had 12
points in the first half, scored
13 points in the third quarter
alone.
The Bears defense also held
the Knights to just eight
points, again.
“We don,t play real good
against zones and they went
to that zone in the third quar
ter, we made some bad deci
sions,” said Upson-Lee boys
head coach Tracy Caldwell.
“I thought we played just as
hard as they did.”
The girls’ game wasn’t
decided until the fourth quar
ter also.
The Lady Bears seemed to
be toying with the Lady
Knights in the second half
after a 19-5 first quarter.
The two teams battled back
and forth throughout the sec
ond half with Upson-Lee lead
ing much of the time.
Within 20 seconds, April
Brown was sent to the line
twice, scored two points to
break a 46-all tie and put the
Lady Bears ahead 48-46 with
2:34 remaining in the fourth
quarter.
Brown’s points were just
part of a Houston County 13-
3 run that took up the last
three minutes of the game.
The Lady Bears were fouled
eight times in the last three
minutes and were 50 percent
from the line.
However, 50 percent was
plenty enough as the Lady
Bears outscored the Lady
Knights 21-12 in the fourth
quarter.
Lewis and Wacker dominat
ed the first quarter as the
poor Lady Knights could only
watch. Lewis came up with 10
and Wacker contributed six of
the team’s 19 points.

the Lady Knights continued

Upson-Lee went on to win
the second quarter 13-6.
The Lady Knights dominat

team, 19-11 in the third quar

“We went to our zone press
and tried to make them turn
it over a few times, which we
did, we were pretty successful
in scoring off of (turnovers),”
said Upson-Lee girls head
coach Leon Jackson of his
team’s second half rally.
The Lady Knights arrived
at the championship game by
defeating an all-around, less
er Pike County team by a
score of 55-16.
According to Johnson,
Upson-Lee was simply much
better in all aspects of the
game than Pike County and
the Lady Knights used the
game as a test bed for certain
facets of the game.
The Lady Bears, however,
defeated Shaw in a hard
fought 56-54 game.
The Bears arrived at the
championshipjjame by crush
ing their opponents.
The Knights experienced
Pike County’s team in much
the same manner as the girls.
The Knights defense was
rock solid during the game
and would not allow the Pike
County team to score more
than 38 points the entire
game.
The Knights rebounding
enabled the team to score 68
points and advance to the
final game.
Houston faced a more local
team in Central of Macon.
The Chargers were basical
ly outclassed by Northern
who had a career high 42
points.
According to Nix, the Bears’
guards had an outstanding
game and fed the ball to
Northern perfectly.
Because of Northern’s 42
points, the Bears defeated the
Chargers 70-58.
