Christmas may be over, but don't throw away your Christmas tree
By Luci Jou Ilian
Staff Writer
If you are like most people,
now that the holidays are
almost over and the lights and
ornaments have been taken off
the Christmas tree, you place
your tree curbside for the
garbage truck to pick up or
quickly find the nearest dump
to throw it in. There is another
option, though.
Christmas tree recycling
offers a host of benefits. You
can recycle your tree this
Saturday at “The Great
Christmas Tree Roundup,”
hosted by Keep Warner Robins
Beautiful. On January 4th, the
collection, which includes
drive-up service and drop-off,
will run from 8 am to 1 pm on
Maple Street, off Watson
Boulevard.
The Warner Robins tree
roundup began in 1990 and has
been sponsored since 1991 by
Flint Energies and Asplundh
Tree Expert Co. The collected
trees, which are measured not
in number but in poundage,
totaled over 15,000 pounds last
year.
After the trees are collected,
they are taken to Diversified
Carriers and made into mulch.
This mulch is then placed in
parks throughout Warner

Interesting Christmas tree facts:
* Christmas tree farms have environmental benefits. They replenish the
environment’s oxygen supply, serve as wildlife habitat, increase soil sta
bility and provide a valuable and aesthetically pleasing improvement to
the land. Christmas trees are frequently planted on barren slopes or under
power lines where no other crops will grow.
* For every Christmas tree harvested, two to three seedlings are plant
ed in its place.
* Each year, over 36 million American families celebrate the holidays
with a real Christmas tree.
* Just one acre of Christmas trees produces the daily oxygen require
ment for 18 people.
After the holidays, a Christmas tree has many uses:
* Place the Christmas tree in the garden for use as a winter bird feeder
and shelter. Use orange slices and bird food to attract birds,
* Mulch tree and use in your garden or along naturalj»athways.
* Sink trees into fishponds for excellent refdge and feedtft'g’areas.
* Plant balled and potted trees in your yard for added years of enjoy
ment

Three Houston County firefighters were recently recognized for their efforts to assist a man who
was experiencing a heart attack. The rescuers utilized an Automatic External Defibrillator to
‘shock’ the patient’s heart into an acceptable rhythm after answering a call to a Houston County
