The Champion, Thursday, April 2 - 8, 2015 EDITORIAL Page 4A Change in trash service pick-up sign of the times Sometimes less is more. Before long, all residents in DeKalb County will have their trash picked up once a week instead of the current twice-a-week pick-up. The change is coming after a three-month pilot study by the county that determined that pick ing up household refuse, yard trim mings and recycling material at the same time on one day is more ef ficient than the current process. The county expects to reduce its sanita tion equipment and maintenance costs. While the once-a-week pickup was evaluated among 28,000 house holds in Brookhaven, Chamblee, Dunwoody, Lithonia and unincor porated DeKalb, not everyone will be overjoyed with the new sched ule. There’s likely to be plenty of squawking from some of our neigh bors simply because people don’t take kindly to change. They grow accustomed to having certain things done a certain way, and they sure don’t like it when others alter those routines. However, it’s a sign of the times. It’s all about how best to con serve or expend funds and control costs, and often it involves changing the status quo. Government officials and busi ness people everywhere are trying to figure out how to do more with less. The U.S. Postal Service has been considering eliminating Saturday service and other agencies are work ing hard to figure out how to make their operations more cost effective while also more efficient. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The postal service, for example, now allows customers to print their own postage at home, thereby avoiding trips to the post office. Technology advances have made banking less of a hassle for many of us who now can use cellphones and tablets to make deposits and do other banking transactions. This cuts down on stops at the bank and the ATM, less standing in line and probably some reduction in custom er service banking personnel. Remember when visits to the motor vehicle department were a nightmare with ridiculously long waits? They made changes and made their operation less stress producing and reduced wait times drastically. Many of these changes probably weren’t embraced at first. People tend to be suspicious of new ways of doing things and sometimes don’t understand how to do them, how they will be a benefit to them and why they’re being altered in the first place. However, that natural resistance usually eases over time and we find ourselves giving in and giving it a try. And in time we usually forget all about how it used to be. So prepare yourselves DeKal- bites—change is a constant, and your trash collection is just one of several county services that are evolving. ..TellThe birtmer? my Canadian birth is nor A FACTOR...BUTT>«RE IS CERTIFIABLE EVIDENCE ———, That x am not black! /——' ThR^uJ Yr^UR- HAtP INTO THE RING ^ I<gio*«:34 ifczs CHAMPION www.thechampionnewspaper.com PUBLISHER: CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER: CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER: MANAGING EDITOR: LIFESTYLE EDITOR: LEGAL AD MANAGER: PRODUCTION MANAGER: PHOTO JOURNALIST: ADVERTISING SALES: STAFF REPORTERS: Main Phone: SUBSCRIPTIONS/ADVERTISING LEGAL ADVERTISING Carolyn Jernigan Glenn Dr. Earl D.
