Of course, all lives matter
One of most debated topics in
years may be the current Black Lives
Matter movement. Many respond to any
reference to the phrase with “all lives
matter”; and they do.
It seems a foregone conclusion to say
that any, or all, lives matter—of course,
they do. However, what many seem to
refuse to acknowledge is the statistically
disproportionate number of Blacks being
killed by police compared to members of
other ethnic groups.
The most recent information posted by
the United States Census Bureau shows
that the current US population is just
more than 329 million. That population
is composed of 255 million Whites, 46.2
million Blacks, 20.9 million Asians, 6.6
million Native or Alaskan Americans
and 1.5 million Native Hawaiians and
other Pacific Islanders. The overall US
population is roughly 77 percent White
and 14 percent Black.
According to The Washington Post,
since January 2, 2015, there have been
1,523 killings by police. Of those, 377
were reported as being Black and 720
were reported as White. The percentage
of Blacks killed by police represents 23
percent of the total number of police-
involved killings and .000007 percent
of the entire Black population while the
percentage of Whites killed by police is
at 47 percent and .000002 of the entire
White population.
The data shows that Blacks are killed
by police at a rate of 3.5 times more
than Whites are. One may speculate that
one group is involved in more criminal
activities than are other groups; however,
this is not the case, according to figures
on overall arrests in the US.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s
(FBI) latest data of total arrests in
the United States shows that Whites
represent 68.9 percent of arrests and
Blacks represent 28.3 percent of arrests.
Of the 8,383 murders reported by the
FBI, 3,799 were committed by Whites
and 4,379 were committed by Blacks. In
the categories of violent crimes, assaults,
theft, arson and rapes, Whites committed
more than half of the total numbers. The
only two categories in which Blacks were
arrested more than Whites are robbery
and gambling.
Clearly, there are a disproportionate
number of Blacks killed by police than are
Whites. Also clear is that there are more
arrests of Whites than there are of Blacks.
All lives do matter, but attention needs
to be given to those groups who are
arrested less often but killed more often
by police.
