Emory University, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA)—all located within DeKalb County—filed petitions to annex. CDC, CHOA and Emory, which filed separate petitions on June 27, will wait on a vote by the Atlanta City Council sometime this fall. The process of annexation started roughly a year ago for Emory when the university announced it would attempt to annex. DeKalb County Commissioner Jeff Rader, whose district covers the Emory area, said an annexation could have adverse effects on the county. “Commercial districts may potentially follow [in that area] and then you start seeing the surrounding neighborhood begin to erode,” Rader said. Rader also said increased traffic in DeKalb County would be a potential concern. “The expectation is that Atlanta would be more liberal with zoning on Emory and Children’s Healthcare campus and the additional development and people would generate traffic problems that Dekalb County would have to respond to,” Rader said. According to Emory officials, the annexation to Atlanta is “the most viable, long-term option.” According See MOVE on Page 5A
