DeKalb County Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs officials, along with DeKalb County and Tucker elected officials held a ribbon cutting ceremony July 12 to celebrate the new tennis courts at the Tucker park. The renovation project was funded by the 2006 park bond funds. The county allocated $155,800 to the park bond to complete tennis court renovations at Henderson Park, as well as other projects at parks across the county. The previous tennis courts were demolished and four new courts were placed. Marvin Billups Jr., interim director of the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs, said it’s fitting that the courts reopened during Parks and Recreation Month. “Our theme this year is, ‘Get Your Play On,’ and what better place to have a ribbon-cutting than on a tennis court,” Billups said. “We hope that the community will have a great time getting their ‘play on,’ on the tennis courts, as well as the other facilities that are in the park.” Commissioner Nancy Jester, who is no stranger to the park, said the Friends of Henderson Park contacted her when she became a county commissioner to discuss improvements they wanted to see in the park, which included the tennis courts. “This [park] became very near and dear to my heart,” Jester said. “This park will continue to develop. The tennis courts look fantastic.” Tucker Mayor Frank Auman said the city is just as excited as the county to see the new courts. “These [courts] are beautiful,” Auman said.
