Flu spreading like wildfire
For weeks, Georgia has held the not-so-
admirable title of having one of the highest
number of confirmed flu cases in the nation
and, according to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, a downward trend in
the number of flu diagnoses is not expected any
time soon. The CDC estimates that winter flu
epidemics affect 300,000 to 600,000 individuals
annually with an estimated 200,000 sufferers
requiring hospitalization.
According to WebMD, the flu differs from
a common cold in that more than 100 different
viruses can cause a cold, but only influenza virus
types A, B, and C cause the flu. Type A and B
viruses cause the large seasonal outbreaks. Type
C usually causes milder respiratory symptoms.
While the flu vaccine can help protect you from
types A and B, there is no immunization for type
C virus.
The flu is a highly contagious disease that
spreads easily. The virus can be spread by
simply breathing in the air that may have been
contaminated by an infected person’s cough
or sneeze. It can also be spread by touching
contaminated objects such as remote-control
devices, keyboards, telephones and doorknobs.
The virus can also enter the body when one’s
nose, eyes or mouth are touched by hands that
have been exposed to the virus.
Both the CDC and WebMD recommend
keeping one’s hand clean as one of the most
effective ways to avoid contracting the flu.
We encourage our readers and the
community at large to take every measure
possible to avoid contamination and if
contaminated, to isolate oneself from others to
lessen the likelihood of spreading the virus.
