Hundreds attend town hall in support of refugees BY HORACE HOLLOMAN horace@dekalbchamp.com The Coalition of Refugee Service Agencies (CRSA) hosted a town hall meeting at the Clarkston Community Center Aug. 3 to discuss issues facing immigrants and refugees nationwide. The town hall was part of a National Day of Action in response to reports that President Donald Trump is considering not admitting refugees into the United States for federal fiscal year 2020. According to a report from Politico, the Trump administration is considering a shutdown of refugee admissions next year. In fiscal year 2018, the United States allowed approximately 45,000 refugees to resettle in America under the Refugee Act. BY HORACE HOLLOMAN horace@dekalbchamp.com S chool in DeKalb County is now back in full swing as students throughout the county were welcomed back to their classrooms. With more than 100,0000 students in the DeKalb County School District, several community leaders and organizations, including The Champion Newspaper, hosted back-to-school drives to benefit schools. The Champion Newspaper staff coordinated with Decatur Recreation Center, Sauers Communications and Junior League of DeKalb County to provide teachers with notebook paper, pencils, folders, highlighters, crayons, markers, glue and other school items. Donna Seay, who spearheaded the effort for the newspaper, said it’s important to give back to the community “We always try to find ways to give back to the community and ways to let people know that The Champion is for the people,” Seay said.
