AcyC 1 " CIRCULATION | VERIFICATION | COUNCIL School is now in session, exercise caution DeKalb County’s two school districts, DeKalb County School District (DCSD) and City Schools of Decatur (CSD), are now back in session for the 2019-2020 academic year. According to district websites, DCSD has more than 102,000 students, 15,500 employees and 140 facilities; CSD has 5,700 students and 10 schools. Combined, these districts each day are responsible for teaching and caring for almost 110,000 students. As the 100,000-plus students go back to the classrooms, our roads and sidewalks will be crowded with those who walk to school, those who ride buses and those who are driven to school by others. Drivers must be alert to the possibility of students darting across roads and streets and be prepared to encounter congested roads and streets near school zones. A new law regarding motorists and school buses that went into effect in February mandates that all vehicular traffic must stop in both directions on a two-lane or a multiple-lane roadway unless there is a median between the opposing lanes of traffic. According to crashstats.nhtsa.dot. gov, there is an average of 128 school- transportation-related fatalities each year in the United States. We suggest, out of an abundance of caution, that motorists always stop for school buses and children, regardless of whether there is a median. ...Ami? MARVIN... K/OSPIT BALLS AT THE HEAR
