Approximately 1,600
DeKalb County residents
and children gathered for
the annual Let’s Move
DeKalb back-to-school
expo event July 27 at the
Intergenerational Center at
Exchange Park in Decatur.
Let’s Move is an
initiative launched by
former first lady Michelle
Obama. The initiative is
meant to address childhood
obesity and provides parents
with information about
healthy lifestyle choices and
snack options. The initiative
is also sponsored by The
Center Helping Obesity in
Children End Successfully
(C.H.O.I.C.E.S), a
grassroots organization
formed in April 2002 to join
the fight against childhood
obesity, according to
organization officials.
Vanetta Keyes, founder
and executive director of
C.H.O.I.C.E.S, said the
event in Decatur gave
away approximately 1,300
backpacks. According to
Keyes, the first Let’s Move
DeKalb event nine years
ago helped approximately
500 DeKalb students
by providing them with
backpacks.
“It has really been a joy
and fulfillment to partner
with DeKalb and watch this
event grow year after year,”
Keyes said.
Two years ago,
C.H.O.I.C.E.S partnered
with the Atlanta Community
Food Bank to provide Let’s
Move participants with
fresh food during the event,
Keyes said.
“It’s fulfilling to know
we’re helping provide
parents with groceries for
