Family struck by tragedy still picking up pieces BY HORACE HOLLOMAN horace@dekalbchamp.com More than two years ago while visiting DeKalb County after fleeing from Hurricane Irma, 11-year- old Timothy Jones was killed by 28-year-old Brianna Robertson when she ran over Jones with her car. On Sept. 5, jurors convicted Robertson on two counts of homicide by vehicle in the first degree for her role in Jones’ death. Despite the conviction, Jones’ family is still dealing with the emotional scars. “I miss my grandson,” said Jones’ grandmother Elizabeth Burns. “The [conviction] is not going to bring my grandson back and it’s not going to heal us.” Robertson was sentenced to 15 years, with eight to serve in custody. Jones was killed on Sept. 11, 2017 in the driveway of a home located on Barbashela Circle in Stone Mountain. At the time, Robertson lived with her boyfriend and his parents. On the day of Jones’ death, the family hosted a house party for family and friends, including Jones and his mother Shyra Slack. According to testimony, Slack was leaving the party when Robertson approached her regarding an earlier interaction and began yelling at Slack. Robertson got into her car, Slack approached the passenger side of the car and opened the door. Robertson, who witnesses say was intoxicated, put the car in reverse, striking Slack. Jones ran to his mother’s aid while Robertson continued backing out of the driveway. Robertson SEE ADOMA ON PAGE 6 11-year-old Timothy Jones was buried in a customized coffin.
