The Champion Chargers capped off
an undefeated season with their first
DeKalb County Trail to the Title Middle
School Football Championship Nov. 2
at Adams Stadium.
Champion (9-0) defeated Cedar
Grove (8-1) 14-6 to win its first football
title in program history. Coach Shun
Golden said the football championship
was a long time coming for the school.
“[The school] has always been
known for our girls’ basketball
[program and its success], but when
I took over this [football] program
four years ago I wanted to change the
culture,” Golden said. “I wanted it to be
something outside of girls’ basketball
and today we did that. We got that chip
off our shoulder.”
Champion got on the scoreboard
first with a five-yard touchdown run
by Milton Smith in the first quarter. A
two-point conversion run by Channing
Henderson gave Champion an 8-0 lead.
Cedar Grove cut Champion’s lead to
8-6 in the second quarter on a five-yard
run by Boden Walker. Smith scored his
second rushing touchdown of the game
later in the quarter to give Champion a
14-6 lead.
The second half of the game was a
defensive battle between the two teams
as neither team could get anything
going offensively. Champion’s John
Cineas sealed the victory for his
team with an interception with 1:24
remaining.
Smith, who had seven carries for 51
yards and two touchdowns, was named
the game’s most valuable player.
