Dunwoody begins to enhance pedestrian safety

Dunwoody Public Works is
adding two pedestrian refuge
islands and additional sidewalks to
the city.
Refuge islands allow pedestrians
to cross travel lanes one at a time
and provide increased visibility of
the crossing. They also reduce the
perceived roadway width, which
can help lower speeds.
The two locations are Mount
Vernon Road at North Peachtree
Road and Tilly Mill Road and
Andover Drive.
Mount Vernon Road at North
Peachtree Road will get a new
crosswalk, and a pedestrian refuge
island will be added to connect the
Kingsley neighborhood with the
shopping center across the street.
Paving crews will resurface Mount
Vernon Road between Jett Ferry
Road and Dunwoody Club Drive in
preparation for the refuge island and
lane striping.
The location of Tilly Mill and
Andover Drive’s refuge island
will improve safety at an existing
crosswalk, according to Dunwoody
officials. Georgia Power will
relocate two utility poles before
construction begins. Installation of
new drainage pipes and curb work
are expected to begin in December.
According to Dunwoody
officials, the city is enhancing its
pedestrian safety network with
a sidewalk extension and two
crosswalks with new pedestrian
refuge islands. Construction of the
refuge islands began in November
and will cost $450,000. The
pedestrian refuge islands are being
funded by the Special Purpose
Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST).
“We’re targeting two locations
where the high vehicular traffic
volume makes it more difficult for
pedestrians to find gaps for crossing
the roadway,” said Dunwoody
Public Works Director Michael
Smith.
