COUNCIL
Usher in the holiday season with caution
Beginning a few days prior to
Thanksgiving, many will travel near and
far to enjoy the holiday with family and
friends—some by air, some by rail and
many by automobile.
According to the American Safety
Council, Thanksgiving Day is one of the
most dangerous holidays of the year to
be on our nation’s roads and highways.
The agency attributes this statistic to
most employers not giving employees
the Wednesday prior to the Thursday
Thanksgiving holiday off and describes
Thanksgiving as “a day of rushed,
distracted, and fatigued driving.”
The National Safety Council estimates
that 433 people will die on U.S. roads
during the 2019 Thanksgiving holiday
period, which begins at 6 p.m. on
Wednesday, Nov. 27, and ends at 11:59
p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 1.
In addition to the rush of families and
individuals visiting multiple destinations
for holiday feasting, shoppers will be out
in force as early as Thanksgiving Day for
holiday bargains and particularly in the
early morning hours the following day for
Black Friday bargains. Without exception,
each year fights break out in stores as
shoppers aggressively pursue what are often
limited quantities of drastically reduced
items meant to lure shoppers into the stores.
We encourage our readers to avoid
driving while intoxicated, be alert, well-
rested and avoid distractions. We also
encourage those brave enough to join the
millions of others shoppers looking for
holiday bargains to put personal safety
above financial savings.
