Local high school bands seize holiday opportunities
BY JAY PHILLIPS

DeKalb County schools have
long been known for their bands,
and 2019 put some of those
schools’ bands on a pedestal.
Within the last month,
Martin Luther King Jr. High
School became one of the 17
bands and acts from around
the country to play in the 2019
Macy’s Thanksgiving Day
Parade in New York City.
In addition to that landmark
feat, two other DeKalb County
high school bands were selected
to play in the Children’s
Healthcare of Atlanta Christmas
Parade. Those two schools,
Southwest DeKalb and Miller
Grove, made up two of the six
bands chosen for the Atlanta
Christmas parade held Dec 7.
This is a hallmark event for
Miller Grove, as it will be the
first televised performance in
the history of the band program,
according to Miller Grove’s
Band Director Jared Brown.
“It’s great to march down
the street in front of fans and
parents,” Brown said. “It makes
you feel like a celebrity.”
Miller Grove applied to get
into the Children’s Healthcare
of Atlanta Christmas Parade last
year but was denied. However,
the band performed at Carnegie
Hall in 2017, the Chick-fil-A
Peach Bowl Parade in 2018 and
the HBCU Consortium Concert
