"These important institutions are among the principal building blocks of our American democracy," said Thurmond about libraries during his acceptance speech. While there are more than 800,000 books for all ages located throughout the 23 libraries spanning the county, the DeKalb County Library System (DCLS) offers so much more than book rentals. Here are just some of the benefits any DeKalb County resident can enjoy with a free library card: • Every library in DeKalb County has a calendar of events each month that offers classes, social opportunities, games, crafts, club meetings, and other activities, the majority of which are free. • Students can rent laptops, wifi hotspots and other tech devices. • Library card holders can use their card information to bypass many websites with paywalls, including The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. • Free tutoring and homework help is available to students with library cards. • Free access to streaming services like Hoopla or Kanopy which both offer thousands of movie and TV series. • Printing, faxing and other office services. Libraries are not just for book lovers; they are vital resources that we—as DeKalb County residents—must continue to advocate for in our communities.
