Photo by Mark Brock BY MARK BROCK AND JAY PHILLIPS Week eight of high school football saw DeKalb teams notch double-digit victories, with several teams picking up region wins and road wins on Oct. 2 and Oct. 3. Miller Grove, Southwest DeKalb, M.L. King, Tucker, Dunwoody, Columbia, Stephenson, Chamblee, Marist, and St. Pius X Catholic high schools all won their week eight matchups. This marks just the second time this season that teams from DeKalb won 10 or more games in a single week. Dunwoody 31, Arabia Mountain 14 Two second-half touchdowns pushed the Dunwoody Wildcats to a 31-14 Region 4-5A victory over the Arabia Mountain Rams at Cobb Stadium on Oct. 3. Dunwoody (4-3, 3-1) answered an early fourth-quarter Arabia Mountain touchdown with a nine-play, 88-yard touchdown drive to push the lead back to 24-14 with 3:22 left in the quarter. Quarterback Liam Whitehurst threw 49 yards to Koi Young and a 19-yard swing pass to Cam Irastorza to set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Bradley Stephens. Christian Lee added his third extra point of the night. After Jayden Smith recovered an Arabia Mountain fumble that he and Jeremiah Smith caused, Dunwoody got the football on the Arabia Mountain 40. The Wildcats got a 27-yard run by Irastorza and a 9-yard pass from Whitehurst to Irastorza to get into the end zone. Stephenson 50, Cedar Grove 18 The Stephenson Jaguars scored 28 unanswered points to pull away to a 50-18 Region 5-3A win over the Cedar Grove Saints on Oct. 3 at Hallford Stadium. Cedar Grove (3-3, 0-2) scored on the opening drive of the second half to pull within four at 22- 18 before the Jaguars went on the 28-point run to end the game. Stephenson (6-1, 2-1) piled up 583 yards and five touchdowns on 42 plays, led by Jayden Johnson with 240 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. He hit the 2,850 mark in rushing yards for his career during the game. Anthony Booker added 187 yards and three touchdowns as he moved to 2,210 career rushing yards. The defense was led by defensive lineman duo of KJ Green (six tackles, four tackles for loss, a fumble recovery) and Sergio Mason (seven tackles, four tackles for loss, one sack). Chamblee 41, Lakeside 7 Four interceptions and a fumble recovery by the Chamblee Bulldog defense sparked the Bulldogs to a 41-7 Region 4-5A win over the Lakeside Vikings on Oct. 3 at North DeKalb Stadium. The defense ended with 13 tackles for a loss and six sacks, led by William Tate with 10 tackles (six solo, three tackles for loss, two sacks, and one fumble caused). Brock Ryan added 11 tackles (six solo) and one of the four interceptions on the night. Edward Reed had one interception turned into a pick-six and blocked one of two punts on the night for the Bulldogs which was returned 30 yards by Jaylen Tipton-Harris. Jazz Lewis and Ahmad Barry added one interception each in the game. The Bulldogs offense had its own highlights as Brayden Doss threw five touchdown passes, including two to Zeke Corrado. Reed (five receptions, 55 yards), Lewis, and Tipton-Harris added touchdown receptions. Columbia 30, South Atlanta 0 The Columbia Eagles picked up their first win of the season with a 30-0 Region 6-2A victory over the South Atlanta Hornets at Godfrey Stadium on Oct. 3. Columbia (1-6, 1-0) kicked off the night with a screen pass from Czar Daniels to Rashad Silver that went 60 yards to the house to take the lead. King Parrom subbed in for Daniels later in the game and threw a touchdown pass to Karter Harper and ran for another touchdown. Jeremiah Combs got into the scoring with his first touchdown of the season. The defense shut down the Hornets (2-4, 0-1) behind nine tackles for a loss, a pair sacks and an interception by Tim Smith. Hakeem Holmes led the charge on defense with nine tackles (five solo, four tackles for a loss, and one sack) along with Mykel Edwin with eight tackles, Devin Pryce (seven tackles), Martavious Burse (five tackles, two tackles for loss) and Ian Pemberton (one sack, one tackle for loss). Tucker 27, Druid Hills 0 The Tucker Tigers put together a 27-0 Region 5-4A win over the Druid Hills Red Devils at Adams Stadium on Oct. 3. Receiver Jayden Joyner had a big night with four receptions for 113 yards and two touchdowns to go with Thaddeus Tillman's seven carries for 142 rushing yards and two touchdowns for the Tigers (4-2, 2-1). The Tigers defense shut out the Red Devils (2-5, 1-3) behind the play of Jamare Tolliver (nine tackles, two tackles for loss, and one fumble recovery) and Sam Bryant (five tackles, three tackles for loss). M.L King 40, Midtown 6 The Martin Luther King Jr. Lions bounced back from their first loss of the season with a 40-6 runaway against the Midtown Knights at Henderson Stadium in Atlanta on Oct. 2. Jamarcus Harper (12 carries, 140 yards) scored on a 2-yard run to open the scoring for the Lions (6-1, 3-1), and Jaylen Robinson (five receptions, 120 yards, two touchdowns) had a 52-yard pass catch in the first scoring drive and a 28-yard catch and run from Javion Dobbs to put the Lions up 14-0 after one quarter of play. Dobbs and Aaron Graham connected on an 80-yard touchdown pass play to open the second half. Midtown got a late touchdown following a blocked punt in the fourth quarter.
