ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTION • $39.00 DeKalb County displays generosity Two separate incidents recently took the lives of two public servants in DeKalb Coun ty; on Aug. 8, DeKalb County police officer David Rose was shot and killed at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and a month later, on Sept. 8, DeKalb County Fire and Rescue firefighter Preston Fant was killed while battling a fire in Lithonia. While tragedies like these often bring together a community in mourning, those in DeKalb County immediately stepped into taking action to wrap their arms around the families of each man through hundreds of thousands in donations. DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cohran-Johnson said her office was inundated with calls, emails, and messages asking the same question immediately after both public servants perished while protecting the community: "how can we help?" At press time, the GoFundMe fundraiser for Fant's family had collected more than $86,000 while a GoFundMe fundraiser for Rose's family, which has been online longer, had received more than $625,000 in donations. Words of gratitude on each fundraiser left from those who work at the CDC, or along side Fant and Rose, or those that had never met the two men but call DeKalb County home, show how much these heroes meant to the community. We at The Champion are honored to be a part of DeKalb County - a place that comes together and supports those who have suffered the ultimate loss and heartache with generosity and an abundance of love.
