This will be a hard winter for the poor
of R me. Many a bread winner 18 idle
because of lack of work, and many a
family heretofore in moderately < om
fortable circumstances will suffer for the
barest necessities of life. Already the
relief funds of the city and county are
running short, and private charity must
be appealed to, or untold suffering will
ensue.
*•*
There are quite a number of kind
hearted ladies in the city who take a deep
interest in relieving the necessities of the
poor. Several have accidently come
under my observation, and it renewed my
faith in humanity to see these gentle
women suffer inconvenience and even
embarrassment in tueir efforts to alleviate
distress and want among the Door and
destitute.
***
While a few instances come undei ob
servation, the great maj >rity go on their
blessed mission of relief unheralded and
unknown. Many homes will be glad
dened during the coming winter by these
gentle ministers of mercy, but it will re
quire united and systematic effort to keep
thegiu t tpentre of hunger from the
humble cabins of the poor.

The farewell banquet to Mr. A. W.
Walton by the Masons of Rome promires
to be a brilliant affeir. Mr. Walton has
done much for Masonry in this section
and it must be pleasant to him to know
that his services are appreciated. How
much better it is to honor men while
they are living than to pass fulsome res
* elutions about them after they are dead.
What a wonderful institution is Mason
ry 1 Having its birth in the remote daw n
of antiquity, it exists today in every part
of the world, among all nations and is a
mighty power for good wherever its in
fluence is felt. Teaching the purest prin
ciples of morality, it stands for the up
building of character, the purity of homes,
the honor of womanhood, the Fatherhood
of God and the brotherhood of man!

The Search of a Woman at the Jail Result

Amanda Craig is one of the women who
assisted the Bell boys in their Thursday
night’s hilarity, and who was sent to jail
Friday.
The Bells charged her and the other
women with relieving them of about S7O.
Yestetday Deputy Sheriff McConnell,
Jailer Copeland, policeman J. A. Collier
and others proceeded t make a thorough
search on the persons of those in jail. In
the hem of the skirt of the Craig woman
was found ass bill. The search wa con
tinued in a close and systematic manner
and in spite of protests another bill—this
time slo—was found. The woman had
done her best to conceal it, and it is a
wonder it was found.
No more was found on any of those
charged. The officers are of the opinion

CLEANLINESS IS KIN TO GODLINESS.
A Few Facts in Regard to Sanitary Plumb
ing.
Are you aware of the fact that thous
ands of people die every year from being
poisoned by sewer gas?
The public is not aware of the fact that
the most essential feature about a build
ing is the plumbing work, and if it is not
properly put in and properly trapped and
ventilated it will cause more stctoutss and
deaths than any bing else.
Le ky joints in water pipes may cause
damage to decorated ceilings, wall hang
ings, floor coverings in a dwelling house
and in warehouses, stores and cffioe
buildings, may injure the goods stored
i herein, or destroy important documen s.
Leaky joints in the gas pipe system may
destioy plant hf -, or injure book bind
ings aud pic ure frames; they may also
cause id health aud suffering an . some
times death by asphyxiation; at other
tun ;s dangerous gas explosions, and
destructive fires may result. Leaky
j lints iu the soil, drain, waste and vent
pipe system, aside from the annoyance of
toul odois, are tbefreq ient causs, by the
introduction of disease germs, of sickness
aud death in many a household.
The importance of employing only the
best skilled labor for such work cannot
be overestimated. As regards the best
way of doing new plumbing work,
whether by day’s labor oj a fixed per
centage basis, or by contract work, for a
a ipulated sum, much may be said on
both sides of the question. If an owner
chooses for the work a contractor of good
standing and unblemished reputation,
who is personally known to him, and if
this contractor has iu his employ a relia
ble foreman and competent mechanics, a
good job may be secured at a fair and not
excessive price if crrried out by day’s
work.
An equally good j b may, however, be
obtained iu mmy cases if the work is
given out by contract, provided the owner
has beforehand settled all questions of
fixtures and arrangement, aud also pio
vtded the woik is done in accordance with
carefully drawn plans and specifications
under the superintendence of some
qualified disinterested expert of reputa
tion, and prov.ded, finally, a few judi
ciously selt cted and reliable firms of equal
standing are invited to estimate on the
work.
Where the contractor is not known to
the owner or architect ii. is always better
to have the work done by contract for a
fixed sum agreed upon.
Where bids for work are publicly ad
vertised it is generall unsafe to give the
contract to the lowest bidder.
