Thursday, January 4,2018 Tribune & Georgian 3B In the beginning ivas the Word, and the Word ivas with God, and the Word was God, ... The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:1, 14 (NIV) My name is Kim and I love to be pam pered. There, I said it. I love pedicures, getting my nails done, massages, cruises where the waiter places the napkin in my lap and graciously waits our table, fulfill ing every wish. I like it when the atten dants clean our rooms, turning the sheets back and, of course, I love the folded towel animals. Cruise vacations are special treats for me, but it all changes when we get back home. For some reason, my husband doesn’t place my napkin in my lap and I don’t have attendants folding down my bed with towel animals. Reality hits hard! During this Christmas season, there have been several thoughts and passages of scripture that have touched my heart with these verses from John being one of them. Use your imagination and picture Heaven with all of its awe, splendor and majesty. Add to that picture the angels, music like never imagined and endless laughter, joy, peace and love. Most im portantly, more than all of the beauty and wonder, God the Father sitting on His throne, and Jesus, the Son of God is there, along with the Holy Spirit. Then the question comes to mind, “Why would Jesus leave His home? Why would He leave all of this?” He was sur rounded by His Father, by the angels and living in the beautiful place that we can only dream about and He willingly left there to come to earth. It would be easier to comprehend this plan if Jesus had left His throne in Heaven to come to earth as a normal king would have entered. If Jesus had made his grand entrance by being born to a royal family, living in a palace with attendants, staff, hosts of officers to answer and to attend to him at a moment’s notice we might have better understood it, but He didn’t. No, Jesus came to this earth in flesh. Jesus was birthed in a barn with no nurses and doctors there waiting to clean and care for him. He came into this world with onlyjoseph, Mary and the animals. Reality hits hard when we look at the comparison of heaven to this earth. The truth is that Jesus became flesh to live, breathe and experience life just like you and I. He did not live in a great palace in all of its majesty and splendor on earth. Jesus lived as a common man so that He could experience everything you and I would face in this world. I cannot fathom this kind of love that would cause the Son of God to leave his home and come to our world — this world. It had to be love in that the Father would willingly send His Son to take on flesh to live and die for us. It had to be love that would cause Jesus to sacrificially step from the portals of glory into life as the son of a poor carpenter and young mother. Jesus did just that. He chose to leave heaven so that you and I could have life. Jesus came not only to give us eternal life with Him, but to also give us an abundant life full of His joy, His love and His peace in this crazy mixed-up world. That is a gift that far exceeds any gift that I could ever imagine. Jesus came to us, to me, to you. Kim Dockery and her husband, Randy, have pastored St. Marys Church for more than 15 years. Kim serves as women’s ministry director and leads Bible studies for the women’s group. Briefs The Camden County King Free Foun dation will sponsor two events for Mar tin Luther King Jr. Day.
