Thursday, January 4,2018 Tribune & Georgian 3A Scholarship open to local Scouts The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States annually recognizes three individuals who have risen above their peers in exem plifying the qualities of their rank. There are monetary awards for first, second and third-place winners: $5,000, $3,000 and $1,000 respec tively. To be eligible for the award, candidates must be a registered member of a Scout Troop, Venture Crew or Sea Scout Ship; have earned the rank of Eagle Scout, Girl Scout Gold, Venture Sum mit or Sea Scout Quarter master awards; have shown exemplary citizenship in school, scouting and the community; reached his or her 15th birthday; and be enrolled in high school or home-schooled at the time of selection. The deadline for entry to Kingsland VFW Post 8385 is Thursday, March 1. All candidates with full entry criteria will be submitted to the next level of judging by Sunday, April 1, with entries due at national headquarters by Tuesday, May 1. The academy’s multi-day program, taught one day a month over a four-month period, includes training in the basics of economic and community development, plus specialized segments on business recruitment and retention, tourism product develop ment, downtown development, planning and other essentials for community success. Grants available for those who serve at-risk youths The Communities of Coastal Georgia Founda tion (CCGF) announces the opening of its 2018 Commu nity Impact Grant Cycle. Applications are due on Wednesday, Feb. 28. The programs serve at- risk youth and specifically address one of these areas of focus: early childhood lit eracy and/or quality-rated child care; teen pregnancy and births to unwed young mothers; juvenile crime and gang activity; high school graduation and workforce readiness; youth develop ment and innovative ed ucation strategies or risk reduction, including child protective, substance abuse and/or mental health ser vices. Grant proposals may re quest funding up to $5,000. Submitted photo The Camden County Public Works Department tackled hurricane cleanup and much more in 2017 to earn the county’s Shin ing Star Award. County public works department, Boyett recognized as ‘Shining Stars’ The Camden County Board of Commissioners recognized county employ ees for their years of service at a special ceremony on Dec. 7, that also included the announcement of two recipients of the Cam den County Shining Star Award. Those recognized for their service included 38 employees that reached five to 3 5 years of service in 2017. The Shining Star Award offers Camden County em ployees the opportunity to spotlight the work being done by a co-worker, de partment or team of col leagues. Capt. Lisa Boyett of Camden County Fire Rescue and the public works department were selected as the 2017 Shining Stars. The 38 employees rec ognized for reaching a service milestone in 2017 have a combined total of 410 years of service to the county in a variety of de partments. “The contributions of Camden County em ployees are what keep the county running,” said county administrator Steve Howard. “Their efforts are sincerely appreciated as they continuously focus on excellence and take pride in public service.” Those recognized in clude, 35 years, Robert Strickland; 30 years, Toni Bell; 25 years, M.J. Fricke opens wellness center in St. Marys Nurse practitioner Susan Fricke has combined her passion for helping people and her interest in bioiden tical hormones in a new practice named Coastal Georgia Wellness Cen ter and Family Medicine that opened Nov. 1 in St. Marys. “I have been practic ing medicine for over 20 years as a hospital clini cal specialist and a nurse practitioner,” Fricke said. “I graduated in 2007 with a Doctor of Medicine de gree from the University of Health Sciences, Anti gua School of Medicine.” Wellness center staff focus on providing pri mary health care for fam ilies; bioidentical hormone replacement, using the BioTE brand, for estrogen and testosterone imbal ances or deficiencies; and the Healthy Track weight loss program. “Bioidentical hormones are so healthy for you,” Fricke said. “They keep your bones strong, decrease your risk of heart attack and stroke, improve your memory, decrease joint and bone pain and help relieve anxiety and depression.” Bioidentical hormones also protect against breast cancer and prostate cancer and can help people enjoy improved health and a bet ter quality of life, accord ing to Fricke. “I have seen lives changed just be balancing hormone levels,” Fricke said. “It is the greatest re ward to help people enjoy their lives more and be healthier. I truly love help ing people.” The wellness center also has a successful weight loss program with many gradu ates. “It feels great to get the extra weight off and we can help you do just that,” Fricke said. The practice is currently accepting new patients for primary care, women’s health and family medi cine. Insurance is accepted and cash pay for an office visit is $75. The wellness center is located at 2400 St. Marys Road, Suite C, and open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mon day through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday.
