St. Marys Middle students break ground on pollinator garden One week after state school superintendent Rich ard Woods visited St. Marys Middle School to congratu late the school on achieving STEM certification, sixth- grade science teacher Jason Smith and 22 students were breaking ground on a large, circular pollinator garden. Funded by a $1,000 grant from Coastal WildScapes, the garden is designed as a “medicine wheel.” It’s an old-fashioned design used by Native Americans and colo nists to grow medicinal herbs for people. The garden is designed for pollinators and will fea ture locally sourced native plants that will provide nec tar, pollen, habitat and food for caterpillars, butterflies, native bees and other insects. Recent work focused on the hardscape. The wheel’s cen ter is a small circle with pav ing stones, four trellises and four concrete benches. Elizabeth King, who col laborated with Smith in the design and development of the pollinator garden, worked with Smith and his students to clear the soil and establish the beds. Barrett King worked with the stu dents to put up the trellises. The garden is a direct tie-in to the goal of STEM classes — to provide students with a hands-on learning ex perience where they do the work with assistance from adults. Smith’s sixth-grade students are studying the basics of agriculture. Their focus is learning about soil, soil structure, erosion and water conservation. When they advance to seventh grade, they’ll focus more on life sciences and the role of native plants in our ecosys tem. Smith is the leader/facil itator for the school’s STEM programing. The students will plant the first row of the wheel in Jan uary. They hope spring will bring blooms for butterflies, bees and other insects.
