PRECAUTIONS FOR
GRAND JURY:
You have been sum
moned to appear and po
tentially serve your com
munity on the grand jury.
Grand juries play a vital
role in the criminal justice
system and county gover
nance. Failure to appear as
directed may subject you
to contempt of court pen
alties.
In light of the CO-
VID-19 pandemic, the
Superior Court has imple
mented the following pre
cautions to promote your
health and reduce the risk
of exposure in accordance
with the guidelines es
tablished by the Centers
for Disease Control, the
Supreme Court of Geor
gia, and the Georgia De
partment of Health: hand
sanitizing stations have
been provided, masks are
required to be worn at all
times inside the court
house, room capacity has
been limited, six foot social
distancing measures have
been utilized, rooms are
disinfected regularly.
If you or anyone in
your household is infected
with COVID-19, are ex
periencing symptoms con
sistent with COVID-19,
or are in quarantine due to
exposure to a person with
COVID-19, then contact
your Clerk of Court at 912-
568-7137. You should also
notify the Clerk of Court if
you are a member of an im-
mune-compromised popu
lation (or are living with
someone who is immune-
compromised), are over
the age of 60, or have small
children but lack child care
due to COVID-19.
You should also con
tact your Clerk of Court if
you:
• no longer reside in
Wheeler County, or
• are a convicted felon
and your civil rights have
not been restored, or
• are not a citizen of
the United States, or
• will be engaged in
work necessary to public
health/safety and no re
placements are available to
fill the position during this
term of jury duty, or
• are 70 years of age or
older and request perma
nent removal from the jury
list of Wheeler County, or
• are a full-time stu
dent enrolled and taking
classes or exams on the
dates indicated in the jury
summons, or
• are the primary care
giver having active care and
custody of a child six (6)
years of age or younger and
have no reasonably alterna
tive child care, or
• are the primary un
paid caregiver for a person
over the age of six (6) with

690(C) with no reasonable
alternative arrangements
for continuing the home

ror (physician’s certificate
required), or
• have already served
as a juror within the last 12
months, or
• have another request
for deferral.
Pursuant to O.C.G.A.
§15-12-10, if “any person is
duly summoned to appear
as a trial or grand juror at
court and neglects or refus
es to appear, or if any juror
absents himself or herself
without leave of the court,
such neglect, refusal, or
absence may, after notice
and hearing, be punished
as contempt of court.”
Said person could be sen
tenced to up to 20 days in
jail and incur a fine of up to
$1,000.00, at the discretion
of the presiding judge.
A Message From Carol Bragg,
Wheeler County Clerk of Court
While many view jury service as just a
nuisance, something to be avoided, rather
than a responsibility and privilege of citi
zenship, Wheeler County Clerk of Court
Carol Bragg would like to thank all jurors
for their willingness to serve in this im
portant role in our judicial system. She of
fers these instructions and tips for jurors,
claimants, defendants, witnesses and oth
ers when coming to court. Traverse jurors
are reminded to phone the Clerk’s office at
912-568-7137 after 3 p.m. on the day be
fore they are to report to be given impor
tant reporting instructions. A machine will
give them the message after office hours.
Jurors may be excused from reporting if all
cases are disposed of. Grand jurors should
report as directed on their summons, and
do not have to phone in. All jurors are in
vited to like the Wheeler County Superior
Court page on Facebook in order to receive
juror notifications.
When reporting for jury duty, please
be prompt and dress in a manner that
shows respect for the court. Mini skirts and
shorts, including ladies’ dress shorts, and
baggy pants that fall below the waist, hats,
sunglasses, sleeveless dresses and sleeveless
shirts are not allowed. You should not wear
t-shirts depicting violence, sexual acts, pro
fanity or illegal drugs. It is recommended
that you layer your clothing as the court
room is kept cool.
Please leave your cell phone, purse or
other bags in your vehicle, and turn off all
pagers and radios. Weapons and electronic
equipment such as video cameras, voice
recorders or cameras are prohibited. The
use of recording devices and cell phones in
courtrooms is restricted by Uniform Supe
rior Court Rule 22 and O.C.G.A. § 15-1-
10(1). Copies of this rule and the form to
use devices and request to record are avail
able in the Clerk of Court’s office. Violators
are subject to contempt of court penalties.
Enter the courthouse through the
McRae Street entrance where you will go
through a metal detector. You are not al
lowed to bring any bags, packages or per
sonal belongings into the courtroom, un
less previously cleared by the Judge, the
Sheriff or the Clerk of Court.
The courtroom is a place of order and
structure. Jurors and others should at all
times act in a respectful manner when in
the presence of the judge, court staff) at
torneys, court officers and other persons
attending court. Enter and leave the court
room quietly, so you do not disturb others.
Bailiffs are on duty to help maintain order.
If you are approached by the bailiff, please
comply with their request. Your coopera
tion is appreciated.
Pursuant to O.C.G.A. §15-12-10, if

FFA Land Judging Team
competed in the Area IV
FFA Land Judging Career
Development Event held
in Toombs County on
January 12. The Jr. Middle
School and Sr. High School
Teams finished 1st overall.
Marlee Veal was first
place high individual, Am
ber Seabolt was second,
Cole Smith third, and
Owen Stokes was fourth
high. The Jr. team placed
fourth overall at the area
contest.
The middle school Jr.
team placed first overall at
the area, with Lane Con
nell being the high scoring
individual and Trent Butler
the third highest. Finishing
in the top two at the area
CDE qualified both teams
for the state competition to
be held at a later date.
The Land Judging Ca
reer Development Event
provides students the op
portunity to determine
land classification and use
and treatment practices for
selected sites. The students
must consider topsoil tex
ture and thickness, effec
tive depth, permeability
of subsoil, slope, erosion,
drainage and land capabil
ity.
FFA is a national or
ganization of over 500,000
members preparing for
leadership and careers in
the science, business and
technology of agriculture.
FFA is an integral part of
the agricultural education
program in public schools.
