Spring is the busiest
time of the year for the
Recreation Department,
with T-ball, softball and
baseball seasons now be
ginning. Overstreet wants
“to assure our citizens that
our recreation department
programs will not experi
ence any lapse in delivery
and implementation,” dur
ing the transition of leader
ship.
Smith began his posi
tion in March of 2019,
coming from the Laurens
County Recreation De
partment where he was re
sponsible for field and fa
cility maintenance, the
Splash Pad, and programs.
“Matt has made significant
improvements to the con
ditions of our fields at Ed
Smith and was instrumen
tal in the startup of the
Aquatics Facility,” Over-
street said. “He has also
made a positive impact on
the frequency of use of our
fields and parks.”
Strickland joined the
VRD in a maintenance po

March 2019, he was pro

“have been instrumental in
increasing participation in
our sports programs and
managing the direct super
vision of the programs,”
said Overstreet.

The Vidalia High
School baseball team
opened up their season last
week with a home game
against the Cavaliers of
Calvary Day and then trav
eled to take part in the
Baseball at the Beach Tour
nament on Saturday.
VHS vs. Calvary
It was one inning that
separated these two teams.
The pitching from both
sides did an excellecnt job
with Landry Mead for
VHS going six innings and
allowing just four hits. Ca-
den Spivey closed out the
game in the seventh for Vi
dalia.
Vidalia got five hits in
the game, but were able to
string some together with
Walker Moncus and Mi
chael Blount picking up
RBIs as VHS got a 3-0 win
over the Cavaliers.
VHS at the Beach
The Indians took on
Bleckley County in their
first game in the Baseball at
the Beach tournament
hosted by Glynn Academy.
The Indians picked up
the win over Bleckley by
the score of 4-2.
VHS then took on the
host team and picked up
their first loss of the sea
son. The Terras of Glynn
Academy got their bats go
ing as they rolled to a 9-4
win over the Indians.
This week VHS hosted
Tattnall County on Tues
day after presstime and
will be back in action on
Friday with the Pirates of
Appling County coming to
town at 5:45 p.m. On Sat
urday VHS will be back at
the Baseball on the Beach
tournament as they face
Prince Avenue Christian at

TCHS Splits Opening Week
By Mike Branch

The Toombs County
High School Bulldogs
baseball team got their sea
son underway last week
with games against the
Fighting Irish of Dublin
and the Cavaliers of Cal
vary Day. Toombs blasted
their way to a win over
Dublin, but fell short down
in Savannah.
TCHS vs. Dublin
It took just three in
nings for the Bulldogs to
come out on top of the
Irish on Tuesday of last
week at home.
Logan Knight was on
the mound for the Bull
dogs and threw a solid
game keeping the Irish off
the scoreboard.
At the plate the Bull
dogs got a lot of help from
the Irish pitching in the
way of walks and hit bat
ters. In the bottom of the
first inning six walks and
three hit batters plus a few
hits led to 13 runs for
Toombs.
Toombs added three
more runs in the second
inning, also with help from
the Irish pitching. That put
TCHS up 16-0 on Dublin,
and after holding in the top
of the third inning, TCHS
had the win by the run
rule.
TCHS vs. Calvary
On Friday at historic
Grayson Stadium the Bull
dogs went up against the
Cavaliers, and came up on
the short side of the score-
board.
Calvary took the early
lead with three runs in the
bottom of the first inning,
and then added two more
in the second for a 5-0 lead
over the Bulldogs.
Calvary plated one
more run in the fourth in
ning, and their pitching
did the job as they held
Toombs to just two hits in
the game. The only hits for
Toombs came from Daw
son Brantley and Chandler
Lynn.
With that Calvary got
the 6-0 win over Toombs.
This week Toombs
took on the Portal Pan
thers on Monday, will face
Appling County on Thurs
day on the road at 6:00
p.m. and Tattnall County
on the road on Friday at
6:00 p.m.
