Jake
Camarda
By Loran Smith
With Jake Camarda being named
to the Associated Press preseason All-
America team, there was an immedi
ate flashback to Georgia’s most ac-
complished
punters of the
past.
There are
many storied
kickers to have
worn the Red
and Black, dat
ing back the
thirties when
William Cole
man Hartman
was the incum
bent.
Those long in the tooth with a re
call of Hartman’s career would be per
suaded that Hartman had to have the
strongest leg of all UGA punters. His
calf muscles were bigger than a small
pine sapling which, perhaps, explains
how he was able to punt a football a
record 82 yards against Tulane in
1937. Hartman said his kick went out
of bounds “on the fly” at the Tulane
six-yard-line, which means that, add
ing 15 yards behind the line of scrim
mage, his punt traveled 97 yards in
the air, making it unquestionably the
longest punt in Georgia history from
toe to turf—or from kick to next con
tact, either a returner’s hands or terra
firma.
When Spike Jones broke Hart
man’s record with an 87-yard wind
aided kick against Auburn in 1967,
the old coach lobbied for an asterisk
by Spike’s name in the record book be
cause of gusting winds that afternoon.
The line of scrimmage was the Georgia
ten-yard line. Spike stood five yards
deep in the end zone. In addition
to an assist from the wind, Spike was
the beneficiary of the most fortuitous
bounce and roll a punter could experi
ence. The ball tumbled perfectly.
“I don’t think Coach Hartman
ever forgave me for breaking his re
cord,” says Jones, who spent eight
years playing in the National Football
League. Jones’ name appears in the
Bulldog record book five times in first
or second place in various punting cat
egories. He was certainly one of the
Bulldogs’ greatest punters.
Hartman’s name remains in the
record book for the most punts in
a game, 14 versus Auburn in 1937.

The Montgomery County Eagles
football team rolled to a big 56-15 win
over the Panthers of Portal at home on
Friday of last week. The Eagles spread
the ball around in the running game, but
racked up a total of 338 yards in the
rushing game.
The Eagles also got to show off their
new lighting system that was finished
being installed earlier in the week. The
Eagles put in all new LED programma
ble lights and were able to use them for
the entrance and after the many touch
down that they scored in the game. They
will provide a better setup during foot
ball games, for band performances, and
for the soccer programs, and everything
else that the school holds on Brogdon
Field.
Halfway through the first quarter of
the game the Eagles were already out to
a 7-0 lead over the Panthers. With just
over six minutes to go in the first, the
Eagles started at their own 26-yard line
after a punt from Portal. A good run by
quarterback Bo Davidson moved it out
to the 47-yard line, and then Brandon
Denmark went across midfield to the 39
of the Panthers. Davidson took it to the
24-yard line, and then Rome Thornton
put it in from there for a touchdown.
Nishawn Wise went in for the two-point
conversion to make the score 15-0 with
2:13 left in the first.
In the second quarter of the game
the Panthers fumbled the ball at their
own 24-yard line with the Eagles jump
ing on it, setting them up with great field
position for their next possession. Den
mark had a solid run all the way to the
5-yard line. Two plays later big Talik
Jackson punched through the middle of
the line for a touchdown with 8:16 left
in the half. They added the extra point
by Jackson Cartwright for a 22-0 lead.
On Portal’s next drive Jackson had a
sack that ended the Panthers drive and
gave the ball to MCHS at the 34-yard
line. Samari Madison had a solid run to
the 18-yard line, and another run by Da
vidson made it lst-and-goal at the 7-yard
line. Two plays later a pass from David
son to Denmark made it 29-0 with 4:26
left in the half.
Portal did move the ball well late in
the half as they worked it inside the red
zone and to the 9-yard line. The Eagles
made a big stop on 4th-and-l, giving
MCHS the ball back out at the 15-yard
line. The Eagles tried to get in for one
more score, making it all the way to the

and took wins in both
games. Those wins
moved them to 7-0 on

At Windsor on Mon
day RTCA got a big
game from Railee
Thomas as she knocked
in four runs for the Cru
saders. RTCA took the
early lead with three
runs in the top of the
first inning. They added
two more in the third to
take a 5-0 lead.
Windsor got on the
board in the bottom of
the third with one run,
and then added three
more in the fourth to
close the RTCA lead to
5-4. But five more runs
in the top of the fifth in
ning broke the game
open for RTCA as they
pushed their lead to 10-
4.
Each team scored
one more run in the sev
enth inning, but RTCA
took the win, 11-5 over
Windsor.
Thomas had three
hits to go with her four
RBI’s, and Madison Wil

The Vidalia High School soft-
ball team got one game in last week
around the weather as they picked
up a big Region win over Bacon
County in Alma.
VHS got the first run of the
game in the top of the first inning
on an RBI single by Madison Starr
that drove in Alii Taufmann. Bailey
Holland was hit by a pitch and had
to come out of the game with Tym-
ber Harris taking her spot. Harris
then scored on a hit by Bralie Carey
and an errant throw. That put VHS
on top 3-0.
Bacon got a runner to third base
in the first, but Starr, who was pitch
ing, got out of the jam. Bacon did
manage to get two runs across in the
bottom of the third inning on a
couple of VHS errors, closing the
lead to 3-2. Bacon tied the game in
