College play-by-play announcers are
generally homers for good reason. Their
employer, at least indirectly is the school
which they represent.
Even so, many
of those on the
outside are not
philosophically
comfortable with
blatant “homer-
ism,” such as that
of the late Larry
Munson, who ar
rived in Athens
By Loran Smith far from being a
homer. He later
learned, however,
that his popularity was based on his overt
passion for the team.
When Verne Lundquist first heard
Munson while driving to the Atlanta air
port from an afternoon Alabama game in
Tuscaloosa, he was appalled at Munson’s
frequent use of “we” on the broadcast of
a Georgia night game. However, when
Lundquist was the radio play-by-play
voice of the Dallas Cowboys, he would
have had difficulty criticizing manage
ment on the air, since he, too, was a club
employee in his radio role.
Nonetheless, Verne was amazed at
how much of a homer Munson was. The
Braves’ Milo Hamilton was a fine base
ball announcer but was severely rebuked
by the Georgia Tech alumni when long
time announcer Al Ciraldo was replaced
by Milo at the direction Bobby Dodd,
Tech athletic director. The Tech alumni
felt like Ciraldo “was one of us.” Ciraldo
soon got his job back.
When Scott Howard, Georgia’s vet
eran announcer—now in his 14th season
as the Bulldogs play-by-play voice and
28th with the broadcast—succeeded
Munson in 2008, Bulldog fans were fa
miliar with him because Scott had been
providing color on the network for years.
They became aware of his broadcasting
style in 2007 when he announced Geor
gia’s road games as Munson’s declining
health caused him to call home games
only
Looking back, the transition from
Munson to Howard was seamless—ow
ing to the fact that the Decatur-born-
raised-in-Nashville-and-Miami-Howard
has a durable, resilient and seasoned
voice. He functions on the air with a
bent to give his audience the facts. Fur
thermore, he has never tried “to be like
his predecessor.” He gets excited but

last week.

What a week it was for the pitching
staff of Vidalia High School’s softball
team. They played three games last week
with a different pitcher throwing in each
game. All three, Tymber Harris, Bailey
Holland, and Madison Starr, threw no
hitters as the Indians defeated Bacon
County, Islands, and East Laurens.
Vs. Bacon
Against the Red Raiders of Bacon
County on Tuesday at home, Harris was
in the circle and took care of business for
the Indians. Harris struck out the side in
the first three innings of the game to re
cord nine straight outs by strikeout.
Vidalia picked up just one run in the
first inning. Tori Wright walked and then
stole second. A walk to Emma Humphrey
put two runners on base, and then Wright
came in to score on an error on a ball hit
by Alii Taufmann.
In the bottom of the second inning
Harris walked with Crystal Franklin com
ing in to run for the pitcher. Franklin was
moved over to second on a bunt, and that
was followed by a two-run home run by
Starr to put VHS up 3-0.
VHS blew the game open in the third
inning. Humphrey led off with a single,
and a single by Rileigh Robinson put two
runners on base. Taufmann hit a shot into
right field to bring in one run. Jesslyn Col
lins drove in two runs for a 6-0 lead. VHS
added three more runs in the inning to
take a 9-0 lead over the Red Raiders.
Harris held over the next two innings
to get the win, and the no hitter for the
Indians, 9-0. Harris struck out 13 batters
in the game, meaning only two outs were
not from strikeout.
Vs. Islands
Holland was returning to the circle
for the first time since she had been in
jured several weeks ago, and she made the
most of it with the second no-hitter in a
row for the Indians. Holland struck out
eight batters over her seven innings
pitched, and the VHS defense had a very
good game behind their pitcher.

It was Homecoming for the Bull
dogs of Toombs County High School
last Friday night in The Pit. TCHS
hosted the #5 ranked single A Hornets of
Pelham, and it was a battle, but in the
end Pelham came out on top.
During halftime the Bulldogs
crowned a new Homecoming Queen
and Princess. The 2021 Homecoming
Queen was Ava Bullard and the Princess
was Breanna Rodriguez.
The game was scoreless over the
first quarter. On the first play of the sec
ond quarter Cam Robinson intercepted
a pass in the end zone, but the ball went
back to Pelham after a penalty was called
against the Bulldogs. The Hornets took
advantage and took it in for a touchdown
with 10:57 on the clock. They missed
the extra point, but led 6-0 over Toombs.

After a big win over the
Red Devils of Hawkinsville
at home last Friday night,
the Montgomery County
High School football team
are 4-0 for the first time
since 1989. The win also
moved them to 3-0 in Re
gion 4A, giving them cur
rently the best record.
Big plays in the first
quarter by Brandon Den
mark for 30 yards and a 31-
yard run by Cam Wallace
set MCHS up at the 13-
yard line. Penalties moved
the Eagles back, and at the
start of the second quarter,
quarterback Bo Davidson
then found Denmark for
the touchdown to put the
Eagles on top.
Hawkinsville answered
with a touchdown to tie the
game at 6-6. Later in the
quarter a big 61-yard com
pletion to Denmark set up
another MCHS touch
down. Wallace went in from
25 yards out for the second
touchdown of the game for
the Eagles, that made the
score 12-6.
Samari Madison caught
a 30-yard touchdown pass
as the Eagles pushed their
lead to 18-6 in the third
quarter. The Eagles added a
safety and Hawkinsville did
get another touchdown,
