Sweet
Onion
Cinemas
Something big is coming back to
our community. The Sweet Onion Cin
emas closed during the pandemic but
the owners are planning on reopening
the day after Thanksgiving to bring its
five theaters back to this community.
The cinema originally closed in
April of 2020 and the Parkers tried to
reopen in July of that year, but in the
middle of the pandemic there were not
enough people coming to see movies to
stay open. Then the movie industry
shut down, as there were no new re
leases hitting theaters.
At that point any new movies went
to online streaming and video on de
mand. But the industry has seen the
benefit of having releases to theaters
first, and give them a window before
sending movies to streaming services.
It has been a long process for own
ers David and Melanie Parker, but they
have made the decision, and are making
a huge commitment as they are remod
eling and improving the theater for their
community
The Parkers know that it is an expe
rience when going to a movie theater
that few can replicate in their own
homes. Experiencing the movie on the
big screen with the high quality sur
round sound that just immerses the
moviegoer into the movie is an experi
ence that you cannot replicate. To have
the fresh popped popcorn, to be able to
shut off your phones, put all the distrac
tions aside an truly get away and let
yourself be a part of the moment is
something that everyone can enjoy, and
the Parkers are excited to be bringing
that back to Toombs County.
Each theater will be filled with all
new rocking seating, new projectors,
and new audio equipment to bring a top
quality experience to movie goers. The
owners are also putting in a new HVAC
system that not only will move more air
and make the facility more comfortable,
but it also uses ionic filters that will
make it a safer environment by being
able to filter out most pathogens.
Along with the new equipment they
are also redoing the concession area
with new machines that will keep the
facilities more sanitary There will now
be two areas with a fountain drink area,
new popcorn machines, and more.
Many of the upgrades do not just
improve the comfort and experience for
the customers, but they serve another
function in making it easier for the
Sweet Onion Cinemas to clean and keep
the theaters sanitized. The Parkers have
gone this route as they want their cus
tomers to feel safe while coming out to
see movies the way they are meant to be
seen. The Parkers have also improved

Jadhari Jones flashes a big grin as she receives her crown as the Homecoming
Queen at Vidalia High School for 2021.
By John W. Conner
On a night when a beautiful Jad
hari Jones was crowned as Vidalia
High School’s Homecoming Queen of
2021, the Vidalia Indians football team
got themselves right back into the Re
gion 2-AA race with a 50-21 win over
East Laurens.
And if there was a Homecoming
Queen, the King of the Gridiron at
Vidalia’s Homecoming was definitely
Indian QB Bryce Davis.
Davis was involved in every single
one of Vidalia’s seven TD’s, either
throwing or running for the score. For
the record, the Indians’ senior leader
ran for four TD’s and threw for three
others.
The win put the Indians into a tie
for third place in Region 2-AA with
Toombs County, the archrival they are
battling in Lyons this week. Swains-
boro and Jeff Davis are both unbeaten
in the region, while both Bacon
County and East Laurens are winless.
While the Indians and Bulldogs
are meeting in Lyons, the Jeff Davis
Yellow Jackets and the Swainsboro Ti
gers will be playing in Hazlehurst. This
weekend’s games will go a long way
toward determining the 2-AA cham
pion and playoff seedings.
Vidalia got on the board first as
Davis faded back and found Jordan
Powell running wide open in the Fal
con secondary on a 41-yard scoring
pass with 4:51 left in the first quarter.
Davis got the call as the Indians opted
to go for a 2-point conversion that

It was Homecoming for
the Montgomery County
High School Eagles last Fri
day night as they hosted
Telfair County’s Trojans.
The Eagles took the win to
improve to 6-1 on the year.
MCHS quarterback Bo Da
vidson had a career night as
he went 17-17 passing for
336 yards and two touch
downs.
Before the game, MCHS
crowned their 2021 Home
coming King and Queen.
The Homecoming King was
Samari Madison, and the
Homecoming Queen was
Makayla Bell.
MCHS had the ball to
start the game and took over
at their 43-yard line. Good
runs by Brandon Denmark
and Madison moved the
ball across midfield to the
Telfair 31-yard line. On the
next play Denmark broke
free around the left side and
went in for the touchdown
with 10:49 still left in the
first quarter. The extra point
by Jackson Cartwright was
good for a 7-0 lead.
On Telfair’s next pos
session Denmark forced a
fumble, and it was recov-

Heritage Wins
At Homecoming
The Vidalia Heritage
Academy football team
had a Homecoming to re
member. The Eagles took
on Nathaniel Greene in a
region match up and
routed their opponent.
The Eagles started off
with a meaningful pre
game. The VHA family
honored Ethan Yearwood
of Nathaniel Greene, a star
athlete and well respected
student who lost his life in
an ATV accident. The Ea
gles also took time to show
respect to the local police
officer who lost his life
serving his community
One fan had to say this
about the game “Tonight,
I witnessed one of the
classiest and most humble
displays of sportsmanship
I’ve seen in quite some
time. I saw tonight, a dis
play of unselfish character
and honor from the Vida

football team and coach
ing staff. For a fallen local
police officer and a fallen
opposing team member,
special flags were flown
and paraded. A team of
gray, white, and blue
donned special sleeves of
green (and the cheerlead
ers with green hair bows)
to commemorate a player
they didn’t know. But in
solidarity, they knew it
needed to be done... a sign
of respect and sympathy.
