Joshua instructed the priests to take the Ark of the Covenant and pass ahead of the people. He then invited the people to choose twelve men to lead them, one^ from each tribe. The people broke camp to cross the' river and the priest, carrying the Ark’’ of the Covenant went before them. ^ As Joshua had said, when the priesti carrying the Ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water's eclge', 11 the water from upstream stopped flowing) \ even though the river was at flood stage.
