TCHS Drops 2 To Herons Courtesy of TCHS The Toombs County High School Bulldogs baseball team took on the Herons of Brantley County last week in a three-game Region se ries. The Bulldogs were the #2 team in the Re gion but dropped two of the three games to switch places with Brantley. Toombs are now behind Appling and Brantley and hold the third place in the Region, with just this week left in the regu lar season. Game 1 In Game 1 of the doubleheader, the Bull dogs from Toombs County got out to a four- run lead in the first in ning and held on for a 4-3 victory over the Her ons. The Bulldogs opened up the scoring in the first inning when they strung out six straight hits. Kipp Mosley singled on a 3-2 count, scoring the first run off the game. A few other Dawgs added RBI’s in the inning to push the lead to 4-0. Brantley County ral lied late in the game, but the Bulldogs escaped Game 1 with a 4-3 vic tory. Jesus Quintero went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Toombs County in hits, and Trayvone Har ris picked up the win on the mound for the Bull dogs. The righty went seven innings, allowing three runs on five hits, striking out five. Game 2 The second game didn’t turn out so well for the Bulldogs even though they jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on a Harris double. The Dawgs carried that 2-0 lead into the fourth inning, but a cou ple of timely hits and a few errors gAve Brantley County a 3-2 lead. The Herons pulled away from there to defeat the Bull dogs 9-2 to even the se ries. Lucas O’Conner took the loss for Toombs County. O’Conner al lowed five hits and three runs over four innings, striking out four. Tucker Braddy, Harris, Will Watts, Dawson Brantley, Kipp Mosley, and Tyson Brantley each collected one hit for the Bulldogs. Game 3 The Bulldogs made the long trip to Nahunta on Wednesday for Game 3 of the Region series against the Brantley County Herons. Unfor tunately, the Dawgs could not get the bats go ing and fell to the Herons 5-0 to lose the series. Jesus Quintero took the loss for the Bulldogs. The righty went three in nings, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out three. Tucker Braddy also threw three innings. He walked 4 and struck out 1. Cameron Ledford, Trayvonne Harris, Will Watts, and Dawson Brantley each collected a hit for Toombs County. The Bulldogs played well in the field, not commit ting a single error with Tyson Brantley having six chances, the most on the team. Toombs is in the fi nal week of the regular season this week as they face off with the Bears of Pierce County. Toombs was at home on Monday and in Blackshear on Tuesday for the first two games of the three-game series. They will play the final game on Wednes day in Lyons at 5:45 p.m. Pierce comes into the week in fifth place behind Vidalia who is in fourth. Toombs needs to get a couple of wins to stay in third place with Vidalia facing #1 Appling County this week. Brant ley County is done with their Region schedule. Treutlen Takes 2 From Devils By Mike Branch Sports Editor sports 7 advance@gmail.com The Treutlen High School Vikings baseball team took on Hawkins- ville in a three-game series last week. The Vikings took 2-3 games as they currently sit in third place in the Region. In the first game of the series, in Soperton on Tuesday, Hawkinsville's Red Devils picked up their only win of the week. They outlasted the Vi kings, taking the game 12- 10. The two teams then played a double header on Friday in Hawkinsville. Treutlen came out on top in the first game of the day. They won, 6-3, over the Devils. Treutlen also won the second game of the double header. The Vikings won that game 6-5. Treutlen is now 8-14 on the year and are 7-8 in Region play. Treutlen is sitting at #3 in the Region behind Wilcox County and Wheeler County. This week the Vikings take on Montgomery County on Wednesday in Mt. Vernon at 5:30 p.m., and then wrap up the reg ular season on Thursday against Vidalia Heritage Academy in Soperton at 6:00 p.m. VHS Runs At Pierce Co. Courtesy of VHS Tuning up for this week’s Region 3AA Cham pionships, the Vidalia High School track and field teams traveled to Pierce County on Wednes day of last week to com pete in their final regular season meet of the year. The VHS boys took first place in the tri-meet with the girls finishing second to Pierce County Both teams travel to Pierce County again this Tuesday (4/18) and Thursday (4/20) to com pete in the Region 3AA Track and Field Champi onships. Wilcox Sweeps Wheeler By Mike Branch Sports Editor sports 7 advance@gmail.com It was a tough week for the Bulldog baseball team of Wheeler County High School as they took on Wilcox County. Wilcox is the #1 team in the Region and they solidified that spot with a sweep of the Bulldogs. Wheeler will head into the playoffs at the #2 seed from the Re gion. w Wilcox rolled to a win in the first game of the se ries. They plated two runs in the first inning, added one in the second, and three more in the third to take a 6-0 lead. Wilcox scored two more in the fourth, and one in each of the fifth and sixth innings. That gave Wilcox a 10-0 win. In the second game Wilcox again went ahead early, and this time won the game 13-1 over the Bulldogs. In the final game of the week Wheeler kept it closer, but couldn't over come. The Bulldogs got on the board first with a run in the top of the first inning. But in the bottom half of the frame, Wilcox scored twice to take a 2-1 lead. Wilcox added two in the third and one more in the fourth inning to pick up the win, 5-1. This week the Bull dogs played Portal on Tuesday after presstime, and will play the final regu lar season game on Thurs day at Metter at 6:00 p.m. BPC Hires Men's Volleyball Coach; Set To Add Bowling Program Courtesy of BPC Brewton-Parker Col lege Vice President of Athletics Chris Dooley has announced the re turn of men’s volleyball as well as the addition of men and women’s bowl ing to the athletics offer ing on campus in Mount Vernon. Alongside the an nouncement of the addi tions, Dooley has also announced the hiring of Josh Branan to lead all three programs. Both BPC bowling programs plan to compete in NAIA and the Southern States Athletic Conference for the 2023-24 season while men’s volleyball will compete as a club sport for the first season with plans to compete in the NAIA in the 2024-25 season. “We’re excited to ex pand the athletics de partment with the addi tion of bowling as well as the return of men’s vol leyball,” Dooley said. “We are equally excited to bring Josh here to help lead the programs and to forge new paths within our athletic department. We look forward to what is in store for all three programs and for the fu ture of Barons Athletics.” Branan comes from a fellow NAIA member, Tennessee Wesleyan, where he previously served as the Head Vol leyball Coach for three seasons. Prior to TWU, Branan was the Assistant Coach at Clarendon Col lege for four seasons. “I am thrilled to join the Brewton-Parker Ath letics staff,” Branan said. “I would like to thank Mr. Dooley and all in volved for entrusting me to not only restart men’s volleyball here, but to bring a new sport to the department as well.” He began his love for volleyball 31 years ago and played competitively on the Atlanta Juniors travel ball team. In col lege he became a student assistant at Middle Geor gia and then later a stu- Josh Branan dent assistant at Valdosta State, where he also cap tained the men’s club team. Branan is an avid bowler and has been in the competitive circuit ever since his college years. He loves the sport and has shared his love of the game as a volun teer youth coach during his free time.
