there was a lot of hype

Throughout South
Georgia, Fred Barber’s
legend is intact—from
Friday night lights to
pharmacist to outdoors-
man. When he showed
up in Blackshear in 1972
in a pickup truck, natu
rally, with his two bird
dogs, Tom Cotton and
Lard beside him, natu
rally, and hung out his
shingle, he noticed that
to enter Pearce County
you had to cross a creek
or river. He almost broke
out into song, “Home
Sweet Home.”
The good life, with a
little enterprise and en
ergy, is often at our fin
gertips. Fred Barber
worked seven days a
week, most of his life.
He would open his phar
macy before and after
church in order for the
sanctuary folk’s conve
nience.
His days off were
spent in the woods, fields
and streams, but he also
took in duck hunting
trips to Arkansas and
hunted dove in South
America. In deer season,
he could bring down a
12-point buck and field
dress it in a matter of
minutes.
Not sure who Ed
Dodd had in mind when
he created the comic
strip character Mark
Trail many years ago, but
there is no question— if
he had come along a few
years earlier, Fred would
have been perfect for the
part. I enjoyed watching
Fred Barber run the foot
ball, and I have enjoyed a
few quail hunting trips
with him over the years.
He was the consum
mate fullback in the old
full house backfield for
mation, and he was the
consummate outdoors-
man.

People with a mild (25-decibel) hearing loss are
nearly twice as likely to develop dementia as
those with normal hearing.
D
People with a moderate hearing
loss are three times as likely to
develop dementia
i>
Individuals with
untreated hearing loss
face an increased risk
of dementia compared to
those without hearing loss.
People with a severe loss are five times
as likely to develop dementia
D
For every 10-decibel increase in hearing loss, the risk
for dementia jumps by 20 PERCENT. For people over 60,
36 % of their dementia risk is associated with hearing loss.
According to several major studies, older
adults with hearing loss - especially men, are
more likely to develop Alzheimer's disease
and dementia, compared to those with
normal hearing. Men with hearing loss were
69 percent more likely to develop dementia
than those with no hearing impairment.
The risk escalates as a person's hearing
loss worsens. Those with mild
hearing impairment are
nearly twice as likely to
develop dementia compared
to those with normal hearing.
)
Hearing aids can help prevent dementia.
Numerous studies show that hearing aids not only improve a person's hearing—they also help preserve a person's
independence, mental abilities, emotional and physical health, and work, home, and social lives. A full, happy life keeps
your brain active. Early identification and treatment of a potential hearing loss helps minimize risks later in life.
Hearing aids can also help those who have Alzheimer's.
