TCBOE continued from page 1A millage rate of at least 14 mills to prevent the loss of state equalization grant funding. According to Su perintendent Barry Waller, the reassessment of prop erty values has caused the rollback millage rate, which is required by the state of Georgia to avoid a tax increase, to fall below the required 14 mills to re ceive the state equalization grant. Forfeiting that grant would cause the school to lose approximately $2.3 million of federal funding annually “Therefore, the Toombs County Board of Education proposes to decrease the 2022 millage rate by 0.37 mills and adopt the minimum millage rate of 14.00 mills required to receive state equalization funding,” Waller comment ed on behalf of the Board. “The Toombs County Board of Education would like our property taxpay ers to understand that un less your property has been reassessed (taxable value increased) during the year, then you will not see a tax increase.” When the total digest of taxable property is pre pared, Georgia Law re quires that a rollback mill- age rate must be computed that will produce the same total revenue on the current year's new digest that last year's millage rate would have produced had no re assessments occurred. The budget tentatively adopted by the Toombs County Board of Education re quires a millage rate higher than the rollback millage rate; therefore, before the Toombs County Board of Education may set a final millage rate, Georgia Law requires that three public hearings be held to allow the public an opportunity to express their opinions on this increase. All concerned citi zens are invited to the public hearings on this tax increase to be held at the Toombs County High School, 500 Bulldog Road, Lyons, Georgia on Sep tember 7, 2023 at 5:30 p.m. and September 14, 2023 at 8:15 a.m. and 6:05 p.m. Larry Stevens presents "The Hornets' Nest, Wilkes County - 1700s" at the Four Rivers monthly meeting. Four Rivers Chapter Holds monthly meeting The Four Rivers Chap ter Georgia Society Sons of the American Revolution held its monthly meeting on Thursday, August 17, 2023, at 6:00, at Chatters Restaurant in Lyons. With President George King pre siding, there were 14 in at tendance. After the invoca tion, Pledge to the U.S. Flag and the Pledge to the SAR, President George King called on Dual Member Dess Smith III to introduce the speaker for the evening, Larry Stephens of Savan nah, to present his program on "The Hornets' Nest, Wil kes County - 1700's." Mr. Stephens talked about the difficulties of moving to the area between the Broad River, Savannah River and the Oconee River during the 1700's. Not only did they have to make do with what was available to them in the wild, but they had to defend themselves against the Creek and Cher okee Indians. President George then called on Chaplain and Dual Member Emory Fen nell to lead the members in the SAR Recessional and benediction. Train continued from page 1A tracks he began engaging the train’s emergency pro tocols to stop and avoid a collision, but was unable to prevent the crash. The train struck the SUV’s right rear quarter panel, causing the vehicle to rotate clockwise and come to a final uncon trolled rest around 33 feet east of the area of impact. The train also traveled ap proximately 353 feet east on the tracks before com ing to a controlled stop. Davis told officials that the accident happened so fast that she really did not remember exactly what happened. She said that she was not trying to beat the train, but there was a car in front of her at the stop sign and her vehicle’s rear end was over the tracks, causing her to be in the path of the train. Sapp told investigators that he utilized the train’s bell and horn to warn the driver of the vehicle of the train’s ap proach. The State Patrol de termined that Davis con tributed to the accident by failing to yield, which led them to cite her for failing to yield at an intersection. Neither party was hurt or required medical atten tion. This accident marks the second consecutive crash between a train and car at the intersection of Rudell Road and the rail road tracks. Other crashes of this nature have included a collision at the intersec tion of Rigsbee Drive and Old Vidalia-Lyons Road, and two incidents along Oxley Drive in Lyons. PLEASE RECYCLE NOTICE OF PROPERTY TAX INCREASE The Toombs County Board of Education has tentatively adopted a 2023 millage rate which will require an in crease in property taxes by 3.79 percent. All concerned citizens are invited to the public hearing on this tax increase to be held at the Toombs County High School, 500 Bulldog Road, Lyons, Georgia on September 7, 2023, at 5:30 p.m. Times and places of additional public hearings on this tax increase are at the Toombs County High School, 500 Bulldog Road, Lyons, Georgia on September 14, 2023, at 8:15 a.m. and 6:05 p.m. This tentative increase will result in a millage rate of 14.000 mills, an increase of .511 mills. Without this tentative tax increase, the millage rate will be no more than 13.489 mills. The proposed tax in crease for a home with a fair market value of $175,000 is approximately $34.75 and the proposed tax increase for nonhomestead property with a fair market value of $100,000 is approximately $20.44.
