WBHS Wall of Fame ceremony set Friday
By Chris Bridges
Journal Sports Editor
Winder-Barrow High School will try
again to hold its 2016 Wall of Fame induc
tion ceremony this Friday night after last
week’s schedule event was postponed due
to weather conditions.
Three new members have been selected
including Robert McCain. Joyce Healan
McDaniel and Kimberly Garren. The cer
emony is scheduled to take place this
Friday between the home varsity basket
ball games against Flowery Branch High
School.
ROBERT MCCAIN
McCain was a four-sport athlete during
his WBHS career playing on the school’s
first subregion championship football
team as a senior in 1960. He was also a
standout basketball player competing for
the state runner-up teams in 1960 and
1961.
Following graduation, McCain attended
Young Harris and Georgia Southern. He
would later return to his high school alma
mater as a coach. He coached the basket
ball team to a 61-21 record and a region
title in 1972.
McCain also coached track and golf
at WBHS, earning region titles in both
sports. He is the only WBHS coach to win
region titles in three sports.
After his coaching career, McCain
became principal of his alma mater from
1976-1985.
JOYCE HEALAN MCDANIEL
McDaniel set a single game scoring
record for the WBHS Lady Bulldogg
basketball team on Jan. 26, 1951, with 45
points. That record still stands today.
During her senior season, McDaniel
averaged 18.6 points per game leading the
Lady Bulldoggs to a 20-2 record and a
berth in the state tournament.
KIMBERLY GARREN
A current coach at WBHS, Garren was
a three-sport standout during her days as
student-athlete.
She lettered all four years in softball,
basketball and tennis. In 2003, Garren
helped lead the Lady Bulldoggs basketball
team to an 18-win season.
Garren truly excelled on the tennis court
where she helped lead her team to a subre
gion championship in 2002 and 2003. She
continued her tennis career at Young Har
ris College where she became the school’s
first ever All-American player.
She is the daughter of WBHS boys
basketball coach Ron Garren and is an
assistant coach for the Lady Bulldoggs
varsity team and the head JV coach for the
WBHS girls.
See the Feb. 3 edition for the complete
bios on each of the Wall of Fame induct
ees and information on how to make nom
inations for future Wall of Fame members.

Wildcats to battle
several new faces
By Chris Bridges
Journal Sports Editor
The 2016 football season will feature sever
al new opponents as well as a new region and
classification for the Apalachee High School
Wildcats.
Unlike previous seasons where the Wild
cats played nine region games, the 2016
season will feature five region contests as
AHS competes in Region 8-AAAAAA. While
Apalachee and county rival Winder-Barrow
High School will both be in 8-AAAAAA, the
Georgia High School Association has added a
seventh classifcation for the 2016-2018 sched
uling cycle leaving both local schools in the
second largest division.
AHS is tentatively scheduled to face River
Ridge High School in the season opener at
home on Aug. 26 followed by road games at
Union Grove and Discovery. The Wildcats
then return home for a Sept. 16 game with
Walnut Grove and a Sept. 23 matchup with
Monroe Area.
The region schedule is set to begin on Sept.
30 at home against Winder-Barrow. The Wild
cats will then travel to region foe Dacula High
School on Oct. 7 before having its open week
on Oct. 14.
The final three games, all region contests,
will be Oct. 21 at Lanier, Oct. 28 at home
against Gainesville and Nov. 4 at Habersham
Central.
A preseason scrimmage against North
Oconee is also scheduled for Aug. 12 although
the location is still being ironed out by
coaches of the schools.
AHS is coming off an 0-10 season in
2015. In the past three seasons, the Wildcat
program has gone 1-29.
WBHS, AHS hoops to
meet again Saturday
Local fans will get another chance
to watch the basketball programs from
Winder-Barrow High School and
Apalachee High School compete this
Saturday.
The day begins with a freshman boys
matchup at 1:30 p.m. Junior varsity
action is set to begin at 3 p.m. with the
junior varsity girls competing followed
by the JV boys at 4:30 p.m. The varsity
games are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
Once again the WBHS girls and the AHS

Webb says recognition by U.S. Marines
both surprising and appreciated honor
By Claris Bridges
Journal Sports Editor
During his coaching career, Heath Webb has been
the recipient of a host of honors and recognitions.
A recent honor, however, came as a complete
surprise to the coach and ranks as one of his most
cherished. The Winder-Barrow High School football
mentor was the recipient of the Semper Fi Coach
Award, presented by the United States Marine Corps
and Glazier Football Clincis. The honor is given to
recognize high school football coaches who display
faithfulness to the misson of their team and who
exemplify the Marine standard of excellence of
developing leaders.
Webb will receive the award at a 2016 Glazier
Clinic in Atlanta on Feb. 27.
“Personally. I’m honored to receive any award
from the USMC,” Webb said. “What makes it even
more special is that I was nominated by one of my
coaches, Luther Price, who is a Marine. Coach Naji
Lyon, our offensive coordinator and offensive line
coach, is also a Marine. The tremendous amount of
respect I have for these two gentlemen makes this
award truly special to me.”
Webb’s leadership has played a key role in the
turnaround of the WBHS football program.
