RoboClovers take on first Stronghold
By Niki Garrett and
Camryn Ross
F or the 2016 compe
tition season, team
5132 is off to a great start
on our build season.
They are currently work
ing on our scale model and
our prototype. They have
a good idea of what they
are wanting to do with our
hot and how they are going
to achieve this. The 2016
First Robotics Competition
(FRC) game, Stronghold,
was announced at Georgia
Tech on Jan. 9.
Our new members are
stepping up to the chal
lenge of creating a hot
as they work together to
build the best robot they
can. The next six weeks of
build season will be fun,
but rigorous. However, our
team will try our hardest
to reach the goals/expec
tations they have set for
ourselves and the ones the
competition has imposed.
The Stronghold game
consists of different barri
ers that you need to cross/
disable in order to weaken
the other team’s defenses
and to claim and conquer
their tower.
To weaken the tower, the
hot needs to shoot a “boul
der” into a goal in either
the top or bottom of the
castle. When the tower is
completely weakened, the
hots on the same alliance
can surround the castle,
capturing it.
The robot can be no
heavier than 120 lbs. and
can’t be taller than 4x6
during the match until the
last 20 seconds then they
are able to extend and be
as tall as needed in order to
reach the bar to pull itself
up and to claim the oppos
ing team’s tower. You are
unable to hit any other hots
or that is a penalty against
your alliance.
The different obstacles
are needed to cross consist
of:
Portcullis
The Portcullis is an
arched gateway with a door
that opens when lifted up.
Cheval de Frise
The Cheval de Frise is a
series of four independent
ly tilting, weighted poly
carbonate platforms. The
platforms rotate about a
pipe in the middle and are
weighted so that they rest
on alternate sides.
Moat
The Moat is a 2-1/2 in.
high, 4 ft. 2 in. wide, and
1 ft. 8 in. deep u-shaped
channel, formed by vertical
rectangular steel tubes.
Ramparts
The Ramparts are two
static, steel ramps, side by
side, facing opposite direc
tions. Each ramp is 2 ft.
wide and 1 ft. 10 in. deep,
set at an 8 degree angle.
Drawbridge
The Drawbridge is an
arched gateway with a
door that lowers toward
the NEUTRAL ZONE, y
down, the opening is 3 ft. 6
in. wide and 5 ft. 5-3/4 in.
tall (to the top of the center
of the arch).
The door is sprung so
that it will return to a
closed position when there
is no weight on it. The
door can be manipulated
at any point, but for refer
ence, it takes approximate
ly 2 lbs. of force applied at
the top edge of the door for
it to begin to move. Once
moving, the required force
increases to a maximum
of 5 lbs.
Sally Port
The Sally Port is a door
W’ thick, 4 ft. wide, 2 ft.
tall that can only swing
toward the NEUTRAL
ZONE.
The door is sprung so
that it will return to a
closed position when it
is not being held open. A
force of approximately 1.5
lbs. must be applied to the
outer edge of the door in
order for it to open.
Rock Wall
The Rock Wall is a steel
block that is 4 ft. 2 in. wide,
4-1/2 in. deep, and 4-1/2
in. tall.
Rough Terrain
The Rough Terrain is
constructed from thirty-one
(31) pieces of square or
rectangular steel tubing.
That is spaced out in a
manner to give the impres
sion of a rough rocky ter
rain.
Low Bar
The Low Bar is a flap
opening that is 1 ft. 4 in.
tall and 3 ft. lOin wide.
Platform
Platform is a permanent
ly installed barrier on the
field
All of these obstacles can
be placed in one of nearly
ten-thousand combinations
chosen by the audience.
The RoboClovers are a
partnership between the
Barrow County 4-H Club
and the Barrow County
School System.
Sims Academy plays a
huge role in where they are
able to meet as well as hav
ing resources they are able
to use otherwise would be
without.
The facilities they use at
Sims Academy allow our
team to fully extend our
abilities. With the member
ship of the three schools
(Apalachee, Winder-Bar
row, and Sims Academy),
they were able to make
our team grow. They are
also lucky enough to have
mentors aid us as well as
the teachers who make this
team possible. All of these
advantages help us greatly
and they will surely do our
best to use them in our
journey through this year.
For the 2016 season they
have a good mixture of new
and returning members:

Britton, senior, Apalachee
High School

Luke Black, senior Wind

THE BLAME GAME - Does
anyone take personal responsibil
ity for their actions these days? I
seem to read so many stories in
which people blame their circum
stances, their environment, their
upbringing, or other people for
their actions.
I suppose the most recent,
shocking example is Ethan
Couch. This 16-year old blamed
his parents for spoiling him and
then claimed that his “affluenza”
caused him to drive drunk and
kill 4 people.
Of course, humans have been
blame-shifting for thousands of
years. Just look at Adam and Eve.
At ACS, we are trying to teach
our students to take personal re
sponsibility for their actions. Af
ter all, each one of us makes our
own choices.
