Winder-Barrow High School Wall of Fame Induction:
NEW MEMBERS OF WINDER-BARROW HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC WALL OF FAME
Winder-Barrow High School officially inducted its latest athletic standouts in its Wall of Fame during Friday’s home basketball games. (Left)
Joyce Healan McDaniel was recognized and officially inducted for her efforts on the basketball court. Her 45-point performance on Jan.
26,1951 remains a Lady Bulldogg record, more than six decades later. McDaniel is shown with her sons as well as WBHS athletic director
Rob McFerrin and principal Al Darby. (Right) Robert McCain was inducted for his contributions as an athlete, coach and principal at WBHS.
He was a standout football and basketball player and would return to coach at his high school alma mater. As a coach, McCain led WBHS
basketball, track and golf teams to a high level of success. He later served as principal at WBHS. He is shown with his wife, Elaine. See

KIMBERLY GARREN
Kimberly Garren, fourth from left, was also inducted into the WBHS Wall of Fame after being a three-sport standout in basketball, tennis
and softball. Garren was a two-year starter for the Lady Bulloggs slow-pitch softball team, and made the transition to the fast-pitch game
her junior and senior seasons where she played second base. Garren was also a four-year varsity letterman for the Lady Doggs basketball
team where she played guard. The 2003 team recorded a school-record 18 wins that season, the most in 20 years by a Lady Dogg team.
Garren would find her greatest success on the tennis court as a four-year letterman. She would lead her team to the 2002 subregion cham
pionship as a junior, and follow that with another subregion crown in 2003. Her individual senior season was highlighted by an undefeated
home record. Her 2003 season would end with the Lady Bulldoggs advancing to the Sweet 16 in the state AAAA tournament. A scholar
athlete throughout her high school career, Garrren was the recipient of the Steve Powers Award for earning 12 varsity letters as well as the
winner of the Erroll Ridgeway Tennis Award and Scholarship. After graduating from WBHS, Garren would play collegiate tennis at Young
Harris College. She is currently a teacher and coach at her high school alma mater.
High School Wrestling: Area Tournament
Staples wins area for AHS, seven local wrestlers set for sectionals
By Chris Bridges
Journal Sports Editor
Apalachee High School’s Dylan Staples
won first place in the 152-pound weight
class at area last weekend and will now
look to advance at state sectionals.
Staples is one of seven wrestlers from
AHS and Winder-Barrow High School
whose season is still alive. In addition,
Mat Wildcat teammates Mikey Hitchcock
(third place. 195), Dalton Hood (third
place. 285), Jackson Wadsworth (fourth
place, 170) and Chance Wheeler (fourth
place. 182) each advanced to state section
als, which will be Friday and Saturday at
Lanier High School.
AHS wrestler Preston Marlowe finished
fifth at 160 pounds and is an alternate for
this weekend. Corbin Lang (220) also
won a match for the Mat Wildcats last
weekend.
For WBHS, Tony Santibanez (182) and
Cameron Best (285) both finished as
runner-up and are preparing this week for
sectionals.
“Tony’s opponent (from Clarke Central)
in the finals was top notch,” said Mat Bull
dogg coach Jim Stoudenmire. “I believe
everyone has a chance to beat anybody,
but he will be tough to beat.”
Best's finals opponent from Salem is
someone Stoudenmire believes his wres
tlers could defeat if they meet again this
weekend.
“We may have to change a couple of
things in our game plan,” the coach said.
“At area, he made a couple of little mis
takes which cost him. If he works hard this
week he has a chance. I think Cameron
will have to wear him down rather than
trying to take him out early in the match.”
Sectionals begin Friday with weigh-ins
at 1:30 p.m. and mat action getting started
at 3:30 p.m.
Overall at area. Clarke Central, as
expected, was the team winner with 259
points followed by Lanier (143), Heritage
(141.5) and Gainesville (128). AHS was
fifth in the team standings with 83 points,
just edging Loganville which compiled
82.
Rounding out the rest of the teams were
Salem (79). Flowery Branch (74), WBHS
(49), Discovery High School (32.5) and
Cedar Shoals (19).
The top eight wrestlers from sectionals
this Friday and Saturday will advance to
the state finals on Feb. 11-13 at the Gwin
nett Arena.
