Bethlehem Christian Academy junior high and high school
students recently hosted "Once Upon a Murder,” a murder
mystery theater party.
Students came dressed as a variety of characters, including
Katniss Everdeen, Frankenstein’s Monster and Little Red
Riding Hood.
Pam Freed, BCA Upper Academy media specialist, spon
sored the murder mystery theater party. Students applied for
a part in the play by completing a “character visualization” for
the persona they most wanted to represent, similar to a social
media profile.
Upon acceptance, 29 students received a personalized invi
tation describing how their characters should dress and act.
When they arrived, students used a script they were given that
walked them through the evening, except for the last page.
The cast was allowed to adlib and encouraged to use their
acting skills as they acted out the play together.
“Our favorite line of the evening came from Aladdin (Aaron
Clifford), who, while reading his part, “...and then, my wife
and I...” suddenly looked up and exclaimed, "I’m married?!,”
said Martha Gano, BCA public relations and advancement
coordinator.
Before reading the last page of the play together, students
had time to write down the character they thought murdered
King Henry VIII, and tell how the crime was committed.
Although many students guessed the correct villain, no one
was able to figure out her plan.
Robin Hood, played by Jenae Hemminger, and Huck Finn,
played by Jackson Birt, tied for best costume and received
iTunes cards as awards.
The cast and crew ended the evening with some themed
foods, donated by parents. Some included: Nancy Drew’s
Magnifying Glass Cookies, Katniss' Fresh Roasted Turkey
Legs, Dr. Watson’s Blueberry Scones and Lemon Curd,
Genie’s Cotton Candy Poofs served in Egyptian Perfume
Bottles, Smegal’s “My Precious” Ring Pops and Tinkerbell’s
Fairie Mushrooms (marshmallows and apples). Donated
drinks included Cleopatra’s Egyptian Punch and Master Sher
lock Holmes' Hot Tea.
