T he Apalachee High School boys
basketball team put the finishing
touches on another successful regular sea
son last weekend by dispatching of Dis
covery High School and Flowery Branch
High School.
The victories brought the win total
to 19 as coach Kevin Morris has once
again guided the Wildcats to a memorable
regular season. Entering this week, AHS
needed one win in the Region 8-AAAAA
tournament to guarantee itself a spot in
state.
In Friday’s victory, senior Kamar Bald
win did his usual damage with 30 points,
12 rebounds, eight assists and two steals.
Jabari Hill added 17 points while Ricky
Wonzon finished with eight. The senior
trio was praised not only for their per
formances in Friday’s win, but overall
and what each has meant to the Wildcat
program.
“There was a lot of emotion for senior
night,” Morris said. “What a great night it
was for them. We had a great crowd and a
great student section. One of my favorite
things is to be able to take them out of the
game one at a time and get the standing
ovation they deserved. Kamar gets a lot
of attention and credit, and deservably
so, but Jabari and Ricky are also very key
parts of our team.”
Friday’s game was close early on as

AHS and Discovery were tied at 16 after
the first quarter.
The Wildcats used a strong second
quarter, however, to build a 40-25 half
time lead. The margin stood at 58-42 after
the third quarter.
“We had a good second quarter to give
us some breathing room,” Morris said of
a 21-4 run.
The following afternoon saw Apalachee
defeat Flowery Branch 64-57 to close
out the regular season. The game was
rescheduled from earlier in the season
when games were cancelled due to possi
ble bad weather conditions, which never
materialized.
Baldwin scored 30 points and had eight
rebounds, five assists and a drawn charge.
Hill added 14 points, four rebounds and
a block while Wonzon contributed seven
points, four assists and four boards.
AHS used a 14-4 run to close out the
first half against Flowery Branch. The
Wildcats outscored the Falcons 24-8 in
the second quarter.
The Region 8-AAAAA tournament was
set to begin Tuesday for AHS against
Heritage High School in a game played
at Cedar Shoals in Athens. The semifi
nals and finals are set for this weekend at
Winder-Barrow High School.
