The district held its second annual Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl last week. All four
middle schools and seven elementary schools sponsored teams for the event.

Bethlehem Elementary School and Auburn Elementary School. HMMS placed first in
the middle division, followed by Bear Creek Middle School, Russell Middle School
and Westside Middle School.
HES and BCMS went on to win the regional competition.
To compete in the HRRB, students must prepare by reading all 20 selected books
and practice answering questions about each book as a team. The books change annu

round, and the team with the most points at the conclusion wins.
“We’re very proud of all our teams this year, and the first and second place winners
from the BCSS district competition advanced to compete in the Regional Bowl on
Feb. 6 in Greene County,’’ said BCSS event organizer and instructional improvement
specialist, Meggan McNally. She went on to say, “We want to further congratulate
Holsenbeck Elementary and Bear Creek Middle School, who won in the regional
competition this past weekend, and will now advance to the divisional competition
Feb. 27 at Georgia Southern University. We are proud to have these teams represent
ing Barrow County.’’ The state competition will be March 19 at the University of

Adam Emrich, Georgia Power area manager for
Barrow and Jackson counties, presented a $500
grant to Barrow County School System Science,
Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM)
integration specialist Lee Bane.
STEAM program
awarded grant money
The Barrow County School System recently received
a grant to expand its Science, Technology, Engineering,
Arts and Math (STEAM) program. Georgia Power pre
sented STEAM integration specialist Lee Bane with a
$500 grant check last week.
Bane said that grant will help purchase storage bins for
the district’s elementary schools.
“Our students at all eight elementary schools now have
access to robotics and coding resources, and obtaining
sturdy and moveable storage bins would go a long way
in helping keep this equipment in good working order,
when they are moved from classroom to classroom,’’
said Bane.

BCSS announces Pre-K lottery
Applications for the Barrow
County School System 2016-17
Georgia Pre-K program lottery will
be accepted on March 1-31 on Mon-
days-Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
at the BCSS Professional Devel
opment Center (PDC). No appli
cations will be taken March 21-25.
The PDC is located at 179 West
Athens Street in Winder.
Children must be four years of
age on or before Sept. 1, 2016, to
apply for the Pre-K program. Chil
dren who are five years of age on or
before Sept. 1, 2016, and have not
attended Georgia’s Pre-K program
as a four year old may enroll in the
BCSS Pre-K program.
Families should come to the PDC
to pick up and complete a lottery
application. This information will
also be available online at www.
barrow.kl2.ga.us on March 1.
Parents will be required to show
current proof of residency to verify
their elementary school attendance
zone. Proof of residency is a utility
bill (electric, gas, water, cable/satel
lite, garbage or house phone), set
tlement statement, or a rental/lease
agreement. Parents will also need
to bring a copy of their child’s birth
certificate or other acceptable proof
of age and identity to verify the
child’s birthday/age. A lottery num
ber will be issued to each applicant.
The Pre-K Lottery application
information must be turned in to
the BCSS Professional Develop
ment Center Pre-K Program by the
end of the day on Thursday, March
31. No faxes will be accepted. Any
applications received after March
31 will be placed on the waiting list
and will not be eligible to partici
pate in the lottery. Completion of an
application does not guarantee that
a child will be enrolled, but instead
places the child on the list for the
BCSS Pre-K lottery for 2016-17.
On April 8, eight separate lottery
drawings will be held to deter
mine the class lists and waiting lists
for each elementary school. These
drawings are open to the public

Elementary School, 11 a.m.; Ken

12 p.m.; and Yargo Elementary

BCSS currently has two Pre-K
classrooms at each of the elemen
tary schools for a total of 16 Pre-K
classes. All Pre-K students must
attend a Pre-K class within their
elementary school attendance zone.
The first 22 students drawn in the
lottery from each elementary school
attendance zone will be in Pre-K
Class A, and the next 22 students
drawn will be in Pre-K Class B
for that school attendance zone.
The rest of the students drawn in
the lottery will be used to establish
the order of the waiting list for that
school attendance zone. Enrollment
is limited to 22 students per class.
Any openings that become avail
able in the 16 elementary Pre-K
classes will be filled using the wait
ing list.
