BCES hosts incident stress managment class
Barrow County Emergency Ser
vices recently hosted a critical inci
dent stress management class that
taught students how to assist others
in a one on one, peer- to- peer sup
port system.
The class is part of four-core class
es required for those wanting to be
part of a multi-county team.
“The class taught students what
signs and symptoms to watch for that
may indicate someone is having trou
ble dealing with a critical incident.”
said Lieutenant Scott Dakin, who
taught the class. “It also teaches stu
dents a system in which they can talk
with a person who is in distress and
work them through the incident and
move them into the healing process.”
The class was not only attended by
staff with Barrow County Emergency
Services, but firefighters from Athens
Clarke County Fire and Emergency
Services, law enforcement officers
with Barrow County Sheriff’s Office
and Gwinnett County. Mental health
professionals with Barrow County
Schools as well as several in the
private industry attended the class
as well.
The class was held at Barrow
County Schools and lasted for two
days.
Both lectures and breakout ses
sions, where students used what they
had learned, kept the class interac
tive.
Barrow County Emergency Ser
vices is leading a push to develop a
critical incident stress management
team that consists of public safety
personnel from multiple counties as
well as mental health professionals
from the area.
The main goal is to have a program
in place that will help the public
safety professional’s deal with the
accumulative stress that goes with
their job. This stress can affect their
health, family, and other areas of
their lives. If untreated it can also
develop into post-traumatic stress
disorder.
The team will not only be training
in response to critical incident calls
such as a child’s death, but will also
be developing education programs to
help the public safety professionals
learn how to deal with the stress of
the jobs.
The team will also be developing
education for family members of
these professionals.
This education will teach family
members what to look for if their
loved ones are having problems and
how they can assist them in dealing
with stress. Another advantage of this
is that this system can be utilized in
other areas, including Barrow Coun
ty Schools.
“Our personnel are our best asset
and we want to take steps to help
them if needed.” said Chief John
Skinner. “The things they see in their
job can have an adverse effect on
them and this team is one of the ways
to help deal with that.”
Fires reported at vacant mobile home, house
Just after 8 p.m. Wednes
day, Feb. 10, communica
tion officers received a 911
call reporting a fire in the
300 block of Carter Road.
“Firefighters responded
to this incident and found
light smoke showing from
a vacant mobile home,”
said Lieutenant Scott
Dakin.
Crews made entry into
the mobile home and
found trash burning in the
bathroom of the structure.
Firefighters quickly
extinguished the fire and
ventilated the structure.
The cause of the fire was
an intentional human act.
The investigation is
being conducted by the
Barrow County Emergen
cy Services Fire Investiga
tion Team and the Auburn
Police Department.
Lieutenant Dakin said
that there is no indication
that this fire is associated
with two other recent fires
that are still under investi
gation for being intention
ally set.
Just after 8:15 p.m. on
the same evening, commu
nication officers received
a 911 call reporting anoth
er structure fire in the 50
block of Creekwood Court.
Firefighters responded to
this incident and found
heavy smoke conditions in
the home.
“Firefighters made entry
into the home and found
heavy fire damage in the
kitchen area of the home,”
said Dakin.
“The fire had burned
through the floor of the
kitchen and melted a water
line. The spray from this
line had extinguished the
fire.”
The home suffered
extensive smoke damage
from this fire. Firefighters
quickly extinguished any
remaining hot spots and
checked for further exten
sion. No one was home at
the time of the fire. The
cause of the fire is under
investigation by the Fire
Investigation Team.
Two adults and three
children were displaced as
a result of this fire.
Spring CERT classes to be held March 7-May 9
Barrow County Emergency Ser
vices will be hosting the spring Com
munity Emergency Response Team
(CERT) training starting Monday
March 7, and will be held through
May 9.
“The class will run for nine weeks
on Monday nights at 7 p.m.,” said
John Sliman the CERT Public Infor
mation Officer. “The class concludes
with an emergency drill where the
team can come together and put what
they have learned to use. The date for
this drill will be announced during
class.”
The classes take place at Barrow
County Emergency Services Head
quarters, located at 222 Pleasant Hill
Church RD NE, Winder.
The CERT program teaches cit
izens how to prepare and respond
to possible disasters that may affect
the citizens of Barrow County. The
students learn things such as disas
ter preparedness, search and rescue,
medical operations and many other
subjects.
It is taught by Barrow County
Emergency Services personnel and
teaches students how to first take care
of themselves and their families if a
disaster hits.
After graduating, students can join
the CERT team in Barrow County
if they would like to volunteer. The
team works with local public safety
agencies in many areas including
educating the public on disaster pre
paredness as well as assisting in
responding to large disasters. CERT
volunteers also work special events
and occasionally assist first respond
ers.
